It has been confirmed my horse now has lice :(
He was treated for this about 3 months ago with Barrier Powder but he is now riddled again, he is a feathered horse so it may be that the powder didn't rid it all in the first treatment.
I have been advised that Deosect would be the best thing to use to rid them.

He is very itchy so I am keen to get this sorted ASAP, I have powdered him for now and have ordered Deosect.

Has anyone used Deosect before? how did you find it? Is it the best? I have ordered a 250 tin which from reading online will go a very long way? I am reluctant in using it as I have read a lot of thing online stating how potent it is.

Thanks!!!

I can't speak to using Deosect, but I have used Coopers Fly repellent plus, which is licensed for use in horses and effective against lice. One application killed the lice (pony was crawling with them), but I repeated twice more in 10 day intervals to make sure any newly hatched lice from existing eggs would also be caught. I wiped it on with a sponge cloth and wore gloves, as instructed.
I think Coopers has the same active ingredient as Deosect, permethrin, so I figure the Deosect should be equally effective. Just dilute it as instructed, and I figure you should be safe. You could do a patch test and wait a day to see if you get any adverse reaction is you're worried.

Deosect is very good. We treat all new ponies with it, and also treat all ponies once a year as a precaution.

It is VERY strong stuff, so do a patch test before you use it. Over the years, we have had two ponies react badly to it. So definitely do a patch test.

We find the best way to do it is either dilute it in a bucket and sponge it on, or put it in a garden spray bottle and spray it on. In both cases, then rub it in firmly. I would strongly advise wearing rubber gloves & a face mask and doing it in a well ventilated area.

If you definitely have lice, the best thing is to use it three times, two weeks apart, to ensure that you get them all.

Dermoline Insecticidal Shampoo is good too. Whatever you use you need to do it again 2wks later.

ETA: if you're happy to, it's easier to treat lice with the feathers off so you can get right down to the skin.

Deosect nuked my filly's lice when I got her at 7 months. Applied it once using a bucket and sponge and that was that!

Same here on the advice of my vet. I could actually see dead ones as I was applying it. I think they were all killed with the first treatment but did another two weeks later to be sure. This was a feathered pony too and I didn't need to remove them. I use it now for rock prevention too.
