Hi

Ive got a welsh cob with a sarcoid on his neck/cheek. What is the best way to treat it ? It is growing in size and sometimes looks sore.

cheers

I'm a big fan of BCG injections, seen some pretty bad sarcoids on the face (eye, cheak, chin and lip areas) on two different horses as well as other sarcoids on the body in other areas (under forearm, sheath, girth areas), both horses were treated very sucessfully without any fuss over the space of 3 to 6months, you'd never of known they were there and nothing touch wood has grown back in the same or other places.

I guess it really depends on the type of sarcoid, where about's on the body, if the horse is prone to getting a quiet a few and having a chat with your vet who will no doubt contact LP uni to arrange the best type of treatment.

So many different treatments available now! Best thing to do is to discuss the best options with your vet. Often they will recommend you take photos and email these to Liverpool uni sarcoid dept for further advice - maybe topical chemotherpy cream, may be BCG vaccination regime - the list goes on and on.

Please don't start treating it yourself with random topical ointments and what not though - I have seen many get much worse with relatively little but well meant interference. Sarcoids are funny old things and are best not messed with too much as they don't like it and often blow up dramatically fast!!!

Most respond very well to treatment, so don't get down heartened.

Hi my boy after a year and a bit of ownership suddenly developed tham and grew quite big from nowere -well one did and the flies were awful, i got vet to send pic to liverpool or diagnosis i think you can do this direct yourself its free service mine took three weeks to come back, obv you have to pay vet call out fee , i had liverpool cream made up my boy was trated four times he had to be sedated though cost £500 and £110 for cream i was really impressed but a bout a week before treatment , after months of waiting for diagnosis. cream , etc , they started to go:rolleyes: in shape but had treatment and they more or less dissapeared just like a hard black pea now i panicked when first told he had them , but they are really quite common really i didnt use anything else but ive been aware they can return and be worse its the chance you take my vet says while treating my horse she was treating another three that week as well ( i will keep a fly rug on him next year and try herbal garlic which is supposed to be good thuja is reccommended on here i did buy it but never used it as id paid for cream and waiting for flies to die off for treatment and ditto vet on here says its not a good idea -but happy with liverpool treatment so far they say they can be stress related as well dont know but i also moved yards a few weeks before treatment from a commercial livery yard to a farm yard and noticed he was settled first day , hope your horse gets well but id ask vets opinion

I used Liverpool cream. The whole cost was perhaps £110.

A friend's horse had his popped out-it was small enough to be squeezed out. He then got another one and she used Fucibet (human prescription cream) I was very sceptical as I believe you should just get out the vet but it went within a few weeks.

Another friend also used Liverpool cream successfully and yet another had it tied off successfully.

My Arab had sarcoids under his " armpits" and the vet operated to try to remove them and made them worse - they looked awful. So next thing was to send photos to Liverpool University and to put the cream on.......which I have to say didn't really work. By chance another vet took over and suggested freezing them off and that worked completely. He hasn't had any now for at least 9 years.
