I need to buy some electric fencing for the beastie as we are moving to a new yard. She will have her own field which is excellent because I don't have to worry about her upsetting people but I'll need to fence it off because its huge and if I let her loose on it she would pop.

She's very determined and built like a rhino so it would need to be strong enough to deter her. Some people mentioned rope rather than tape when i asked about this tentatively before but I've been having a look on ebay and the choice is huge.

the rope is dangerous if they get caught in it... i'd never have it, i use tape, the wider the better.
i know it's more expensive, but the Fieldguard stuff is worth it, imho. their fibreglass stakes are easy to get in even if the ground's firm, don't go brittle and snap in winter (unlike the plastic ones, i've lost count how many of those i've had to write off), and their connectors etc are all really hard-wearing. the tape's great too. i live in about the windiest place in England, and it's been up for 2 years, without any fraying at all... i call that amazing. a friend had some cheap stuff put up and after 6 months the tape had frayed at every single holder, so no charge ran through the tape at all.

I used rope to section off my paddock. It's strong & looks a lot tidier than tape. Tape flaps about in the wind & is unsightly.

I used wooden posts as they are strong, & don't bend under the tension of the rope like the plastic ones. I used 'tree stakes' as these are alot cheaper than other wooden stakes. I bought my rope, insulators, connectors, gate hook etc all on ebay from Paddock Perfection. The service was good, rapid delivery & at a reasonable price. Farmcare are another ebay seller who are also good.

When you buy the rope ensure that it has 6 conductors in it & please use proper connectors. If you just tie the rope together the connection will not be good. It's not worth ruining a job for just a few pounds. Good Luck.

If she respects electric fencing then it won't matter whether itrs wire/rope or tape. That just depends on what you prefer. If she doesn't respect it then it'll be no use to you anyway.. I prefer thin wire. I hate tape. It looks scruffy. Just make sure you use the correct posts and insulators and energiser/battery or better still use a mains one if possible.

I have an entire elec fencing kit that I am selling (pm me if you want details).

My mare was a bit of an escapologist and this set up kept her where she was meant to be:

4 1/2 feet posts
3 strands of white tape
Energiser on full power

A couple of zaps and Spring soon learnt! I had 3 strands so se couldn't put her head under her through and the top strand on the highest point so she was deterred from jumping out.
