Hi all pony seems to have grown over the winter and now his amigo fly rug doesn't fit anymore (am gutted as I love it as the material it is made from is dencer than the silky ones I see now)

Am wondering what people's view are on the fly rugs which are half waterproof/ half fly rug material? Pony is only out over night and in- in the day so don't worry about the over heating I've heard people mention and thought that it would be quite a good rug incase we did have showers over night?

So then the next question is what make? I've seen premier equine do one but have to be honest, I don't really like their rug so any other good makes do this style?

Having said that the other fly rug I was looking at were the zebra ones.. Again opinions on them??

Thanks :-)

I've just got one of these,

I don't normally like Rhinegold more of a horseware girl myself but budget is tight at the min. I will let you know how we get on.

One of my friends had splashed out on the Bucas Zebra with the waterproof strip. I will see how they compare I might end up with major rug envy.

I do know some one with a premier equine one they look nice and survived last summer well

Premier Equine has a "Fly Lite" rug, either with or without the tummy strap bit.

I bought one a few years back.

Plus points: unlike other fly rugs it is made of a gauze-type material which, if it does rain, the moisture just goes straight through and it doesn't damp the material, so the horse stays far more comfortable as not out with a wet rug flapping all around. The material is quite stiff when you put it on the horse first, but after getting wet a few times it isn't.

Negative point(s): I guess purely because of the material, some of the seams/fastenings needed repairs at an early rather than later stage in the life of the rug???, but having said that the rug DID last fairly well, considering.

For some reason, when I put both my horses in it, both seemed to be more itchy than usual???? Dunno why........

Thanks but premier equine rugs don't seem to fit my boy

I have a shires one, now in it's 6th year! Still waterproof too, although I have mended where the straps attach a time or two.

Having said that, if Jay gets warm he pulls rugs over his head, so they sometimes rip when they get caught "under his arms" LOL!

I have this rug, it as been really good I got it last year, and i'm using it again, it stays in place and fits very well

We have Gallop showerproof fly rugs, they're in their second year and still going strong, never let us down even in unexpected torrential downpours! We've washed and reproofed and still going strong! They were recommended to me and I was dubious as fairly inexpensive but I'm impressed

I had one and quickly sold it on as it made my pony too clammy under the waterproof section

I've found if the weather is wet and warm a standard fly rug will dry out quickly after some rain and if its chilly I throw a lightweight turnout on the pony instead

I've got a Shores waterproof fly rug for my girl, I think it's great. Cooler than a rain sheet but protects her neck, back and bum from the wet. She still gets wet on the lower side of her neck and on her lower sides, if it's really raining, but the rug is hanging down on the side bits so she's not got much wet material touching her.
