After getting completely soaked through to the skin today, due to the lack of waterproofing of my jacket, I am considering getting a new coat.

Any ideas or recommendations would be much appreciated! :)

I am thinking probably a barbour, or just something that is going to keep me dry!!

Sorry, I know its not Competition.

Thanks :)

Anything Musto, especially the snug :)

True Barbours get very heavy when wet, arn't particularly warm and need waxing ;)

Goretex.

Musto sell them under the ZP banner. Can also find suitable cut for riding if you hunt through the outdoor shops.

Confess, i now have three musto goretex jackets, all bought half price in sales.

Nothing horsey! Berghaus/mountain equipment/mountain hardware/Patagonia/rab/the north face.....get the idea?! Good outdoor brands basically, with goretex.

It's actually a breathable waterproof membrane that all decent waterproofs will incorporate.

Try Go Outdoors for cheap decent stuff - steer clear of regatta and equivalent though - not much cop.

My two Musto coats have been going for years and have never needed to be re-waterproofed.

Also agree with SpottedCat - anything sold outside of the equestrian market will be cheaper. Goretex will be found on most decent brands of coats etc.

Ah right, it says "showerproof", how do you think it performs in really bad rain?
I've always liked the look of musto jackets.

In my experience, despite it not having goretex on it, it performs very very well! The only down side is that the elasticated cuffs get a bit soggy but I've never ever been wet in it. I don't think any soft shell jacket counts as 'torrential rain' proof (the one you linked to is supposedly shower proof for example).

I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for and given the majority of sailors wear Musto...

im going to have to disagree with teapot
however i was in the brecon becons in proper rain..
if its proper rain your after i would go with SC and go non horsey berghaus (sp) or north face type of thing

Many good suggestions - I have a sailing jacket that's very waterproof and also doubles as hi-viz (but less hideous) for hacking.

I will say though, it's worth looking after your waterproof stuff. Nikwax makes good products for washing (I use the rug stuff as it's cheaper :) ) and waterproofing various fabrics and it's very worth treating them regularly.

"showerproof" usually means "turns into a sponge after 20 mins of rain" in my experience. it needs to say "waterproof and breathable".
check out ski jackets etc in TK Maxx if you want to save ££s.
Otherwise, as SC says, outdoors brands. Berghaus, North Face.
I have a new Tog24 Jacket bought in the sale that so far i'm really impressed with.
