Can anyone suggest the best waterproof turnout boots (yet breathable - if that exists when fully waterproof?). My grey veterans legs keep swelling up on and off daily due to standing about in the mud after this crazy rain we've had lately and I know mud fever is about to kick off at this rate which I certainly dont want this early on in the season! He normally stands inside a lot by choice but my stables are currently underwater!

He lives out 24/7 but was hoping just to be able to put them on overnight or something just to let his legs have some mud-free time and I could put cream on his heels etc.

I've been pleased by the equilibrium turnout chaps over the years, I have had other boots from premier equine etc which are OK but the equilibrium ones seem to have the best seal to keep the mud out but not let the legs get too hot. The fit is very important and then you need to put them on tightly around the hoof and then normal kind of 'snugness' around the leg.

I used them first when Millie had a very stubborn case of mud fever and I needed to keep the skin dry.
I do have 2 sets so I always have a clean dry set to put on. Kira's wearing them today to keep her white socks clean ready for a show later!

only thing is you'd need his legs to be clean and dry before you put them on .... is that possible if he's living out?

I fear turnout boots may not be the best solution in the setup you describe. I use them on my boy, but he's only out for an hour or two in winter when the mud is bad. They go on clean and dry over clean dry legs, and his legs are clean and dry underneath when he comes in. I also value them as a bit of protection against the antics he can get up to with his friends when they are out in a mud pit with little or nothing to eat. But if they're standing in mud and wet for hours and hours, the wet is going to soak through, and I would be worried about rubs and consequent infection, especially if they aren't going on clean dry legs.

I know nothing about managing field kept horses, so not sure what to suggest, sorry!
