Best Way to check blade tension?

I normally have my clippers on, then tighten the blades until the motor changes noise then turn 1 1/2 turns to have my blades at the correct tension- Liveryman Arenas. My friend turns them (clippers off) until the screw is tight then does the whole 1 1/2 turn thingymajiggle...

Is anyone of us right or wrong?
 
I normally say with Liveryman/Wolseley machines, spray blades with oil and put on machine, fit the pin through and hold clipper with pin sticking up and drop spring on pin. Then wind down the tension nut until you feel it touch the spring. Then start the clippers and take the tension down half, to one full turn. As the tension tightens, you should hear the tone of the blades change, I normally say try and ignore the motor noise and listen to the blades. The "all the way down and one and a half back routine is fine for Lister, but will crucify your blades and cause overheating if you do it on any other make!!

Thanks for that, thought the tighten right down and 1.5 turns back was true for all of them, will be why mine overheated to such a degree that I completely knackered a set of blades! My clippers are Premier with Lister blades but looking at them and the label on the back I suspect they are made by Hauptner.
 
Yes you are correct, the motor on the Premier is made by Hauptner and similar to the Hauptner 2000, 3000 model. ALthough saying that the tension on your Premier, with Lister blades fitted would normally be lister style IE 1.5 turns back. With Premier blades, they normally clip at looser tension as the blades are thinner...
 
Ive got Heiniger progress clippers and used them for the first time last week, I did up the nut loosely and then tightened it until it stopped just fluffing up the horses coat and actually cut through it. Is that the wrong way to do it?

Can i ask one more question on the subject of liveryman. My motor gives a quick orange spark when i turn them on. Is this something to worry about . They seem to run fine and dont spark after this? Perhaps its normal - but i can remember seeing it before.

I have the Hauptner 2000 and struggle every time with the tension, just used new blades and it took me about 15 mins to get the tension right, I tried motor off, blades on and spring on, nut tightened to feel tension and another 1 1/2 turn clockwise just caught hair, but that was the directions, sure it was luck in the end and just kept trying, what am I doing wrong

That sounds fine, I always say, whatever the clipper, the bottom line will always be, that "the best tension, is the least tension at which the blades clip" for by nature, less tension equals less heat, less strain on the motor and less friction.
 
If your Liveryman is an early Arena MKI (on off switch on top and two filters top and bottom) this may be a sign that your armature is staring to wear, or that the motor condenser is starting to fail. You will usually see some tiny sparks Left and Right when running, but when you start to see lines tracking or fatter sparks on start up this is usually a time to have them looked at.
 
Thank you "engineer", I followed your instructions today and had one of the easiest clips so far with the clippers I use, Liveryman Mustangs. So much easier to get it right doing it your way rather than following their instructions.
