I picked up a year old rescue dog yesterday. SHe is approx a year old and collie x probably with a spaniel.
So far everything is fine, had a vet check up today and will be spayed on friday. She can be manic in the garden (the collie side no doubt) but when she comes in she quickly setttles down and sleeps.
We have four sheep in the orchard in their own fenced pen and she tore up the garden when she saw them and barked. She shows signs of wanting to get in to chase them. She also barks through the gate at the horses in the field. Im sure she has never met anything like these animals. She was a stray picked up by the dog warden.
Am i right in thinking that we should put her on a lead round the horses tonight and say no sharply if she barks at them? One of the horses wont bother by her but i know the other would let fly if she went too close.
Wondered if i should lead her in with the sheep so they all get used to one another. One is a ram with no bits and i think he would probably tell her off if he didnt like her.
I realise this is all going to take some time but all doggy expert advice gratefully received.

I personally would walk right on in there, with a decent training lead and check chain, and reprimand any over selous behaviour, the more u get her in amongst them, and u are there to put her in place, the more familiar she will become with the boundaries.
I do this same routine with all new rescues, with my horses and chickens.

A good sharp check and NO!! to any snappy or lunging behaviour, be calm and project firmness, dont hesitate at all, otherwise u will heighten her excitement.
Tire her out first......a run, or bike ride, with her at your side if u cannot let her off yet, or ball games in an enclosed pen, to burn off some excess energy.

I am by no means an expert but when we 1st got our dog we decided she was just going to have to get used to the horses ( no real choice as she has to come with me to the yard). I went armed with lots of treats and put her on her rope check lead, i allowed her to look and show an interest but any sharp movement to chase i checked and her and told her no.
For the 1st couple of weeks i completely saturated her with the horses, starting with them in there stables or tied up outside then started lead walking her in there field on a short lead building upto a lunge line before i finally felt comfortable letting her off.
Sheep on the other hand i dont have experience of but guess exactly the same thing should work.
Good luck x

Thanks for that. I thought i was thinking along the right lines but just needed reassurance from others.
She does seem willing and responsive to learning which will help im sure. I just want to make sure i start off the right way.
Will let you know of our progress.

Not too sure I'd go right into the thick of it in case its too much for the dog.

Could you try getting some horse hair or pared off hoof so dog can get used to the smell.
