What would be the fastest way to increase a horses weight without causing fizziness?
I am slightly cautious about increasing cereals by much as i dont really know the horses temperament yet but new boy is very very skinny.

The only feed i every usually buy in Spillers Happy Hoof- This was sufficient for old TB.
My plan was to add oil and give extra calories in a slow release way?
Is this correct and if so in what quantity? He's about 15.1hh and carries no condition at all yet!
Also what sort of oil is best ie- soya, vegetable or sunflower?

Thanks

The best way to get weight on is to feed unlimited hay and also feed 3 times a day. happy hoof is probably not the best choice as it is meant for fatties I believe. Plenty of Alfa a oil or hifi is good along with alfabeet/fibrebeet/quickbeet and a good splash of oil in each feed. PLus some non heating nuts if you can and I feed alfalfa pellets

I always use a combination of unmollassed beet and vegetable oil for weight gain. You should be trying for steady and continuous weight gain rather than fast. Putting on weight very quickly can have its own problems, as can making major changes in feed suddenly

I used Allen and Page calm and condition for my boy put wieght on in the right areas i.e topline and general condition.. it needs to be soaked for 5 - 10 mins though .

Your horse needs access to adlib forage - good quality hay or haylage and the fabulous doctor green! I personally avoid cereals.
When I want condition on my TB he gets fed Alfa A Oil & Top Spec Cool Conditioning Cubes. These are high fibre and low cereal - they dont hot him up at all. I also add NAF pink powder which contains pre and pro biotics to make sure he is getting everything out of what I feed him.
I would generally avoid all other conditioning mixes - way too high in sugar and molasses! A&P Calm & condition is also good although I found it was making the feeds way too bulky and my TB would get bored half way through them.

When my mare came to me in August last year, she was also very on the skinny side. We put her on Allen and Page Calm and Condition, its not got a calmer in but all the ingrediants are totally non heating so shouldnt send them lop the loo! M has been fine on it anyway .. we also had her Orgional Hi fi garlic and carrots with a little corn oil, this made some progress but I wanted to give her the extra "edge" to help her gain a little more weight so we changed the hi fi orgional to Alpha A oil and I cant express how brilliant it is. I weighed her a month ago and she was 445kgs .. I weighed her last week and she now weighs 480kgs, and its suited her really well. It is really good. It smells nice too!

I am also one that really likes happy hoof we feed the cobs on it, but for M it wouldnt do anything for her.

This probs doesnt have much info but my mares also a 15.1/15.2 and shes 5.

:)

Alfa A origional, or alfa A oil, as a feed on its own. Its good for horses who need weight and condition, I've never known a horse to fizz up on it.
Soya oil would be the one to use for weight gain if you want to go down that route. A + P calm and Condition I would recommend too.

Give the feed companies you are likely to use a call... they have experts out there to give advice and may even do a yard visit for you :)
