Best way to remove a tick?

Boots has got a tick on the end of her nose and im not sure how to remove it. A friend of ours got a tool from the vets to remove one she had on her horse but her horses leg then got infected! So im not too sure that it was the best method :S

I've just read on another forum that if you turn them anti clockwise and pull them out gently, they come out in one peice. Anyone tried this? or got any other sujestions?

just your fingers.....just pull, then make sure you got the head as leaving that in will cause the infections.
Make sure you then squash it with a hard stone, they are tough little buggers, so you won't squash it in your fingers when you pull it out.
 
Thank you. I think im going to try it with the tick remover. IF the head dosnt come out with its body how do i get it out then? I will be contact the vet at the first sign its not healing well. I dont want her to get an infection!

Is there anything i can do to prevent against ticks as well?
 
Try and squeeze the head out if not you might need the vet.

Not much you can do to prevent them. They don't like garlic, so feed that.

The deer bring them into the fields and sheep too.
 
tweezers work just as well as my dogs keep picking up ticks. Just remember to turn gently and that will force the tick to release and come away. If you pull, then when the head can stay stuck in and become infected. You know you have been succesful when you pull them away and they come out with their legs waving....!

I will try that next time as my stomach seriously churns when I have to extract them! wonder if my dogs will enjoy smelling of some of Jo Malones creations..
 
Thanks guys. We share our field with sheep and it backs on to a wood with deer so guess it could have been either of them. Will speak to the vet about anything to prevent them i think. Im really nervous about pulling it out, its such a silly little thing to get the vet out for tho. Will see how it goes. Might need the vet if i dont get it all out anyway :S
 
its relatively easy, ive had them on me before too :o

you can either hold the tick as close to the skin as possible, turn and pull firmly but quite quickly (i find tweezers a bit fiddly)

OR heat a butter knife and singe the tick, it hould drop off, or use the above method.
 
Either smother it in vaseline or use nail varnish any colour will do! Both these stop the buggers breathing and they let go of their grip and you can just pull them out with tweezers, Had to do my first one of this year on Sunday.
 
Last summer I had to take loads out of my horse, and I found some again yesterday :(

I just use tweezers, and they come out in one piece. Then put them in some alcohol to kill them.
 
You should never use Vaseline, oil, heat or nail varnish etc to suffocate a tick. They get stressed and basically puke up, releasing toxins into their host. You shouldn't squeeze the body either for the same reason. If you don't believe me ask a vet. The safest method is to use a tick remover. All vets have them in stock. Anyone that does suffocate them have been very luck so far. I carry one around my neck on a piece of string when grooming. We get a lot here.

Thanks for everyones replys.

Well iv just got back from seeing boots, prepaird for a little murder and the bloody thing was no where to be seen! And it left no evicence that it was there in the first place either! I check her all over and couldn't find anymore. So i dont know what happend to it :S I though maybe she rubbed it off on her leg or the fence but thers deffently no evidence that it was there at all. Just hope she dosnt get another one now :)
