I jump/hack/XC nevada in pelham and I can just about manage flat in a snaffle. Nevada is very strong and I have tried milder bits but I either feel like I have no control or he grabs hold of them in his teeth, pulls and tries to tank off.

I currently ride him with the pelham with two reins (I know how to) but people at my yard keep telling me to buy roundings but I'm shure I read somewhere that you should not use a pelham without two reins because you will be riding the bit off the curb.

P.S If I where to put a running martingale on whilst wearing the pelham would I put the rings on the top or bottom rein?

roundings are designed to be used with a pelham, in using them you take away some of the curb rein action and balance it out with the snaffle rein, so in effect its much like using a kimblewick

if your using a martingale id say the put it on the snaffle rein, if you use it on the curb rein it can be very harsh and may cause your horse to throw his head up more.

maybe experiment and see what your horse goes best in, as I think this is more important than anybodys opinion that has proberley never even ridden the horse!

Thankyou, I don't think I will use the roundings because we moved up from a kimblewick to a pelham so there won't really be any point.

I will have a go with the martingale next time we go XC.

Stick with two reins. Roundings allow no differentiation between the two actions so IMHO its a bit pointless using a Pelham unless you use it with two reins. And the martingale should be on the top rein when using a Pelham with two reins - if its on the curb rein then the horse is most likely to just throw his head around because the poll pressure will be so severe.

Stick with two reins! I did switch to roundings for a month or so, but in my opinion if you know what your doing with double reins, then its deffinatly a more effective and controlling way! x

Double reins every time (i personally think roundings are pointless, learn to ride with double reins or use a kimblewick! which I know you have so good on you) - martingale on the top rein.

Roundings - NO!

Re the martingale, it's more normal to use it on the snaffle rein. However there is a school of thought that says it makes more sense to put it on the curb rein - the reason being that the action of the martingale is to prevent the head being lifted above a certain point, the action of the snaffle is to raise the head & the action of the curb is to lower it. Thus the action is more consistent & logical if you fit the martingale to the curb rein.
