I am having to stop riding due to pregnancy. My mare is only 14.1hh and I worry I would get to big anyway. But my placenta is low and I have just have decided to behave myself and stop now instead of new year.

I can only store in in the tack room.

What is the best way to store tack? Thinking ko cho line a and leaving in saddle bag? When I was little I remember using brown paper as well- but this was the 80's/ 90's.

Firstly, congratulations. Wonderful news.

As for the tack, I'd probably just get it out for a clean once a month myself but what you've said should work too.

Ko cho line is storage grease so that's exactly the right product. I would recommend wrapping it in a breathable cover - old pillowcases are great for strap work (bridle etc) and you could wrap your saddle in a sheet. Providing your tack room is dry and remains above freezing you should be OK but do check it periodically. Popping some of those dehumidifying crystal things you can buy to go in wardrobes inside the wrapping with the tack might be a wise precaution too.

Congratulations!!! So pleased for you.

I'd give your tack a good clean and then put KO-CHO-LINE on and pop it in a pillow case as pansymouse has advised! When you want to bring it back out of storage, just give it a good clean and condition and off you go!

I love learning from this forum! I would have drenched in neatsfoot oil and stored wrapped in cotton or flannel - old pillowcases usually. But that advice dates from the '70's (ahem) not the '90's! I'm off to get a pot of ko cho line for my stored tack!

Thanks for posting this info on this thread.

We use the leather grease from Decathlon and store ours in cotton sheets in a metal trunk. I have never heard of Ko cho line, and was about to go through all my stored tack and give it some attention again when I saw this post.

*I have checked out some reviews and seen they are quite good, so have ordered a pot.

Sell it, sell the pony .. life as you know it is officially over :(

Does the pillowcase help prevent mildew? I keep unused tack in the house yet it still gets mildew

Yes, I've never had mildew on any kept at home.

I keep all spare tack at home and its all wrapped in old pillow cases or sheets, most bridlework is then popped inside old suitcase, saddles wrapped and in cupboard over the stairs and in 3rd bedroom.
I drag it out every 6 - 8 weeks to check & feed the leather.
Also when I leave my tack at the yard (old but very servicable fitting set) its wrapped in a duvet cover in my 'hidey' place :)

Well in your shoes i would just leave in the tack room. You could put saddle cover and bridle bag if you want, but it should be ok. The only other thing you can do is take it home and maybe put in the garage, when I was a diy and there was no tack room at the yard, I put a saddle rack in the garage and bridle hook, my posh stuff (bridles) go in my wardrobe at the back as I have bridle hooks.

Ours is in the tack room. Some of it hasn't been used for 2 years and it is just fine. I guess that it depends on the tack room.

Congratulations 😊
I put mine in my shed at home in a saddle cover and black bag, has been there for a few years now, I get it out every now and then to check it and it's fine.

Strip the tack down to core elements....ie noseband, browband, cheek pieces etc etc. Scrape and clean as you would normally, then lather in Kocholine and ideally store in a dry environment at a reasonable temperature. Not sure if your tack room meets the description of a dry environment at a reasonable temperature or not, but maybe you could bring the tack home and store in a spare room if not?
