My horse has been bitten pretty savagely by one of his fieldmates, its just a few inches below his withers. Its red raw and about 2 - 2.5 inches across. There is quite a bit of bruising all around and its sore to touch. What is the best way to treat this for speedy recovery? I am currently leaving it open in the day but at night he needs a light rug as its chilly in the barn at night so I am putting sudocrem on it before rugging up (and he has one of those bossy's bibs under his rug to try to make sure the material on the wound does not rub or irritate it). Is this the best way to treat? Anyone have any top tips? Many thanks!!

Hi SW3 :) is it deep? Do you think it would need stitches/do you have any pics?
You're doing the right thing to keep it open to air during the day. Also, I'd rug up during the night too, if your horse were to lay down during the night bedding and all sorts of debris could get into the wound. I wouldn't use Sudocrem though, it's a bit gloopy & thick, it harbours a hell of a lot of bacteria and I find it's more useful for things like skin implications rather than actual wounds. I rely heavily on the usage of Aloe Vera for wounds like this, it has incredible healing qualities & allows the skin to heal without leaving white hair or scar tissue because it penetrates all 7 layers of skin, it's also antibacterial so no nasty bugs can set up camp! I'm actually an independent business owner and my business is based around Aloe Vera for equine use, PM me if you'd like some free samples & I can send some to you to get your horse on his way to healing!
