Sorry bad picture Its a slice of some sort across the pastern area, dont no how he got it as usual in the field ughh. Last time he had one this deep it got infected and was rather icky so have put some NAF wound cream on and bandaged for the night so no shavings stick to it and to keep clean. Wasnt swollen but he usually swells the next day so i am expecting to find a bap in the morning! What would the best treatment be for it? Bandage for couple days? Leave it so air can get round it? Seek vet opinion? Any good healing creams out there as hes illergic to sudocream and savlon cream?
yea was thinking that but our vets was closed by the time i went to the field grrrr (they close at 5) so bandaged to keep clean overnight. So do you think i should get the vet out then?
Can't see how deep it is etc, but if decide against the vet, I'd clean it up and when dry I'd put Equaide on it. Here's a link: http://www.equinefirstaid.co.uk/index.asp
Its great stuff and they are fab customer service people, v speedy delivery. I always have a pot in the fridge and to be quite honest I could chuck out most of my med cabinet and just use Equaide!
Keep it clean and dont put anything on it is the best policy. Putting cream on can actually slow the healing process, as it means the cells that are regenerating under there have more 'stuff' to contend with. I would have thought that will heal in the nex 3-5days sufficiently to forget about it.
Before then, I wouldn't turn him out in mud but if field is dry, leave him in there.
That Equaide looks very good me thinks i shall look more into that thanks
He takes ages to heal, last june he got a gash the same deepness etc in the field on the same leg actually and it got infected and was bandaged for 2 days and on antibiotics for 10 days.It only properly scared over in about january, im being serious like he takes ages to heal if its deep ahhh really in to minds about getting the vet!!!
