Tomorrow morning myself and a few of the girls from the stables are going to our local cubbing meet, however, the meet is at 7am and i wanted to start hacking there about half 6. Its still quite dark at half 6 though, its only about 2 miles down the road. Would hi-viz be ok? There could be up to 6 of us, but could end up only being 2 of us.

We can access the meet farm by going across our farms fields but they are horrifically muddy!! Also we wouldnt be able to see the ground very well because of lack of light but we all canter around the fields all the time so unless a rabbit digs a hole overnight, chances are the ground will be safe - we would only walk!

So would you go down the lanes hi-vizzed up and leave the hi-viz in a bush until we come back?

or ride across the fields hoping the ground is ok and hope you dont get too muddy so unpresentable for the meet?

The lanes are reasonably quiet but could pass up to 10 cars on the way.

I'd go on the lanes in hi viz myself, rather than arriving muddy, 10 cars or so at 6.30am isn't risky imo if you are suitably hi-vized.

I'd go HiViz too.

But much would depend on the weather forecast as to which route I took. I think much of the country will be wet tomorrow, which will make the mornings darker - in which case I may prefer fields.

Hi-viz only works with some light to bounce off the reflective bits. So if it's darkish and the cars don't have headlights on, they still may not see you. I would use the hi-viz but also get hold of some bike lights to tie on (red at back of course, white at front) - use as many as you can.

A friend of mine used to hack in dim light with a lit cigarette - surprisingly effective in the dark. I don't recommend this approach...

Have fun.

Hi vis and reflective stuff - even better if it flashes or something too. Someone would surely let you leave it in their box at the meet (I would!). Have fun!

I dont think we'll see more than 5 cars tbh and those cars will be people from our yard going to turn there horses out etc so will be aware of horses etc x I guess they'll be a few lorries actually going to the meet as well x Didnt really want to take the lorry as its so local but want to be safe x All our horses are safe on the road but may be slightly hyped (especially mine) as he'll know where he's going! x
