Hello,
hoping to glean some information about working pupil positions from those of you who have, or know of someone who has gone about doing it.

I'm going into my final year of uni at Newcastle studying biology but would like to take a year out (at least) before proceeding to the next stage of education.

I was wondering how you made contact, who you worked for, how far in advance you needed to organise it, the length of time you were there and the overall experience if possible please!

Also if there is anyone to avoid...(would be grateful for pms if this is the case)

Would be hoping to work in an event yard for the spring/summer/autumn and do a stint in a NH yard after that to gain a good all round experience of problems/benefits of different horse management systems. Taking my horse would be an important factor for me too.

Many thanks for any information in advance! :)

Hi, not been yet as I'm the same as you (even in that I'm also doing my last year of Biology :) ) but to get the place I found twitter very helpful- sent a message to the event riders association and british eventing. Loads of lovely people retweeted for me :) I did this about a month ago and am starting at a yard at the end of November. I too wanted to take my horse but she just had xrays which are extremely bad news :'( so I wont be taking her and need to ring and ask if its still ok for me to go without one... I thought ringing people would be best/politest but found generally got a better response sending messages. Good luck and don't be put off by a few rejections/ not answering- someone will want you if you ask enough!

wow that's a coincidence! Thanks, that's really helpful. So sorry to hear about your horse, I hope the prognosis isn't as gloomy as it seems :'( and good luck with your final year and hope you have a brilliant time at the yard! :)

Facebook, Twitter, Yard and Groom.... all probably the best places to look. I've never had a working pupil position but found weekend groom work by messaging a top dressage rider on facebook who coincidentally had just had his previous weekend groom leave so he offered me the job.

If you can find email addresses for these riders (I know BD have email addresses for some people in the trainers section - perhaps BE has the same?) then try emailing too.

I'm sure you will find something - just message lots of people and keep your eye out for anyone posting on twitter/facebook when they have a vacancy! Good luck!
