Hi!

So as the title suggests, I am looking for recommendations for the best winter riding jacket. Would want one to keep me warm and cosy, waterproof and cover my bum! Need to be able to ride in it as well as the usual yard duties - any suggestions?!
😊

I usually find that anything that is long enough to cover my bum, is too long for riding in.

My best winter "riding" jacket is actually a snow boarding jacket that I found at a second hand shop.

I bought a Mountain Horse Windsor jacket last year, it's fab. Fully waterproof, not just showerproof.

Keeps me toasty, I like that not too fitted and has velcro on the cuffs, because I hate excess material and it stops my arms getting cold where my gloves end.

Also has a million zipped pockets (God knows, I need zips or my phone drops into the water bucket!) and a couple are hidden inside the zip.

Last thing is the hood is big enough to cover my riding hat!

Totally worth the money IMO.

ETA not 100% sure but I think the back dips to cover arse.

I have a joules three in one too, called a keswick. Much warmer than the expensive Dakota. Just swapped mine due to weight drop and picked on up for similar money second hand!

I have a Joules 3 in 1. It has a detachable fleece lining, windproof, waterproof & snug as anything. Rode in snow & sleet in it last winter & is was so warm!

I too have Joules 3 in 1 jacket, which I have had for at least 9 years!! its served me well, but I've lost the inside part of it now, so its basically just a lightweight jacket now!

its defo seen better days, the pink has faded and it has a few rips in it, so its not massively waterproof anymore!

I've given up spending money on horsey jackets now, I feel that I am just paying for the brand, so now I got for proper outdoor jackets, like Karrimore, regatta etc!! the only thing that you miss on these jackets are the rear riding vents, but for general yard stuff they are good and I will ride in my Joules or Dublin Jackets depending how cold it is!

I have gone through so many winter jackets. I have an aigle jacket that, where I 5 inches shorter (ie average height) would cover my rear in the saddle but after 5 years, it isn't 100% waterproof despite the reproofing. I have also gone through a number of Dublin jackets and while they are long and cover my bum in the saddle, they do tend to snag and tear easily (probably aren't designed for xc hacks through forestry!).
For warmth, ski jackets come up trumps, even the aldi and lidl jackets are fairly decent and on the yard for warm, waterproof and hard wearing, a good old proper waxed Barbour is the only thing for me - I have 2, a long one a the traditional shorter one and they really are the best. Get my dad to rewax them for me now and then plus the pockets are amazing!
