I know this is depressing! Especially as I had to turn the lights yesterday afternoon on at the yard for the first time this year :(

This is my first winter with my Horse, so I have to buy all her rugs. I'm thinking if I do it now it will be cheaper then buying in winter. She will be out every day from 6AM - 6PM then in at night. Her field has natural shelter. I am just wondering what you have found to be the best winter rugs ? she is TBXWBXID if that helps :)

All I have is a fleece and no fill lightweight rainsheet for summer showers :o

I like Axiom rugs which you can only buy on ebay (as far as I know). They are a nice fit on both our ISH and Appy, affordable, seem to be very tough (you can get them with 1800D outer), didn't rub and were generally very good. :)

I also love Weatherbeeta rugs as I do think they are excellent quality and fit our horses well, though they can be a little more expensive. I got my latest Weatherbeetas off ebay too for great prices. The only reason I chose to try Axioms as well was because of the fact you can get such a strong outer (Appy likes to shred rugs!) and the price.

Having tried various different rugs, these are my favourite brands. I've had some real cheapo rugs before but they're not worth the hassle in most cases (in my opinion at least!). Horseware rugs are also excellent, but in my experience they tend to fit finer TB types better and so are not so suited to the horses we have now.

ETA: My ISH is technically also WBxTBxID as well. :)

some of the expensive rugs are absolutely worth it. i've used FAL Goliath rugs for decades and they never rub (well, rub the mane a tiny bit but i've never found a high-neck rug that doesn't), never slip, never leak. i can leave them on 24/7 and they're absolutely brilliant, keep the horses toasty warm in the vilest weather. Rambo rugs are almost as good, never found anything else to touch those two makes. mine are all either IDxTB or TBxWB event types.

im in the same position as you OP. ive only got my masta rainsheet.

But it fits her beautifully, no rubbing, not tightness, great coverage and stays put even when she rolls. So i'll most likely be going down the masta route or shires, as they are meant to be amazing.

We have got a while before i'll put anything else on her though, maybe a fleece under the sheet until it actually gets cold cold at night.

Thanks for the replys :) the Axiom rugs on Ebay look nice. is 300 gm classed as middle or heavy ? :o you can tell I've never had to buy winter rugs before ey! hehe

300g classed as a heavy. 400g is v. heavy. you can sometimes find some really good second hand rugs. I know of a facebook page that was set up for horsey people around my area and often have some really good deals on there. Might be worth a look. equestrianclearancewarehouse is cheap too with top brands but they have limited stock.

I have the stormcheater heavy weight and couldnt rate it high enough. it is one of the more expensive heavy weights, but was being sold at horse shows for around £70. Its incedible- my mare was never cold in it and it look the biz too!!! :)

ThePinkPony, I am also not planning on putting her in rugs just yet :) But my plan is to get the rugs now as I think they will be a bit cheaper. I really like the look off the Axiom ones. Especially as I have a rug shreder in the field with my mare.

Thank you for all your replys :)

I love the Premier Equine buster trio. Fits my medium-weight TB like a dream, and doesn't rub manes out. Dead useful layering concept, too :D

Lauren - if your horse will be out just in the daytime then I would think 300g would be adequate for her (will she be clipped?).

My ISH had a 350g Axiom when it was really really cold last winter (-10) because she lives out through the night but she spent most of her time in a 250g and was more than fine in that. The Appy didn't manage to shred the 1800D Axiom. I know the horses would have been fine in less but the ISH dropped quite a bit of weight the winter before so this helped to keep her in better condition.

Yes HollyWozzle, she will be clipped. Not sure what clip to give her yet. I will just have to see how she goes. I have bidded on the 300 combo rug :) I will get a medium non necked too I think. I will keep the necked for when it gets really cold.

Thanks for your help :) Rubys old owners did say she dropped a little weight last winter.

I have my TB x oldenburg in a weatherbeeta orican i think it is heavweight at around 360grams with either a fleece or stable rug underneath. she is trace clipped but we had -15 here with snow last winter and a wind chill on top of that. so cold our borehole water froze.
