there are so many things to use, so i am after something for large wounds over a large area of the face. two days old, not oozing et, but want to help it heal, and obviously deter the flies about.

awaits the zillion answers, horse ownership is so confusing these days!

thanks:)

I have had success with Equaide - it's a clay based product. Much as I think things like manuka honey are brilliant, it gets spread everywhere, especially if the wounds are on the face.

If you want to deter flies we have found Thomas Pettifers herbal wound gel to be really good. It is a rather disturbing shade of fluorescent pink though.

Sudocreme

Antiseptic, sticks well and stays on the wound a long time, deters flies, keeps the wound moist.

Downside is your horse will look like someone attacked him with gloss paint!

When CM had her op on her face and the wound couldn't be stitched, I was given strict instructions by the Vet to leave it open to the air (no creams etc...) but to put her fly mask on to keep the flies off. It healed up beautifully with no white hairs.

Activated Manuka honey is the best. Not as messy as Filtabac. My vet once told me to forget about any brand products and just put salt onto wounds.

Put salt in the palm of your hand, add a drop of water to damp it then press onto wound. It stings only momentarily and does a great job

thank you all for our responses. i had been using aloe vera gel but switched to sudocreme and all is healing very very well now. few lies here to worry about so not had any problems. i was tempted to just use salt but her skin is dry needs a moisturiser as some wounds are on her skinny hips and such like

Intrasite gel

Best thing for wound healing by far. Open wound should not be left open to the air!- wound beds need to be kept moist to heal properly. Wound gels remove debris from the wound keeping it clean, cushion the nerve endings and so help with pain and keep the newly formed cells moist.

I guess this is in response to my post. The treatment of the horse was done in conjunction with Professor Knottenbelt as it was a suspected sarcoid that was removed, so it wasn't left unstitched and open just on a whim.

I can also vouch for manuka honey. We had a horse that mangled her nose and it did a great job. Because it contains a natural peroxide it actively kills bacteria off and promotes healing.

I always use it for wounds that might be manky! Good luck
