Beta puppy food

We fed Beta Puppy to all three of our litters of labs and they did very well on it.
Our two year old lab bitch was fed it until she was a year old, and our cocker bitch who is now 9 months still gets it.
We've never had any problems with it

I either feed royal canin or arden grange to my dogs. They show, do agility and obedience at Crufts and need to be in tip top condition all the time when also they are'nt maybe working. My border collie is also sensitive and her coat is even fantastic when she has 'blown' it! I dont rate Beta too well we fed it to a litter and did'nt do aswell as they should have on it.

we don't show our dogs, they are both working dogs but they both look fine and their coats are fab. My lab has muscles in her hind legs that a greyhound would be proud of

All of our past litters did very well on Beta......
But I suppose everyone has their preference

I don't have any personal experience of Beta puppy food...

but - what I would do is look at the ingredients and then decide if it is any good.

From the reading and research I have done, I wouldn't feed my dog anything that didn't have proper meat in it - so I wouldn't feed something that says chicken meal or meat derivatives, because I would know that wasn't actual meat.

There is some info on this (admitedly american) website that explains how to read pet food labels:
label info

better products

ingredients to avoid

Am not against comercial food (nor is that website I've linked to)- I just think I would like to feed a good quality one, that is not made of crap. Cos if my dog has to eat it every day - I want it to be good.

So I think you should look at the ingredients on the packet and then make your decision - because people are always going to say 'my dogs are fine on it' or 'my dogs looked terrible on it' based on their own experiences. So is easier to just decide what quality of food you are happy to feed your dog, then see how they do on it

incidentally - I have no idea whether Beta puppy has good ingredients or not as have never used it. Maybe someone who uses it can types up the ingredients? i couldn't find them online.

sorry for ramble

Most of our puppies were started on Beta, as alot of breeders get breeders packs from there. Most of feeding dogs is trial and error. Ours are fed on what suits them individually.
We have several types of feed that we use, the big dog ha to have Arden Grange, but the cockers are fed on a couple of different makes. It depends on whether they are working or not.
If your puppy does well on Beta, keep it on it, otherwise try something ele until you find something that suits! Dog have a quicker adapting digestive system than horses, and can cope with variety. Although obviously a puppy doesn't want its food chopping and changing all the time!
By the way, I saw the pictures of Alfie and when you post me your minis, you can post him too!

It should be on the pets at home website (ingredients)
My pup was on this orginally. He pooped for britain (every 20 mins) was very hyper and didnt enjoy this food. I did a lot of research into the food and I found out that their is something in it which is used in the production of rubber

Wheather or not this is true I don't know. I changed him to JWB and notice a huge difference in the food. I thought all dog food was suppose to be as greasy as Beta but obviously not!

I can't really find anything on beta puppy but the big dogs get Dr John Silver food and here's whats in it;

Nutritional Information for Dr. John Silver Medal

too many horses - I don't know enough to read/understand that bit can only work out from the ingredient list. Which for the Dr John Silver Medal is this (according to their website):

Cereals, meat & animal derivatives, minerals, oils & fats. With EEC permitted antioxidants.

These are the ingredients to Beta Puppy (from Pets at home website - thanks for suggesting that!)

Cereals (Min. 4% Rice), Meat and Animal Derivatives (Min. 4% Chicken), Vegetables Protein Extracts, Oils and Fats, Derivatives Of Vegetable Origin (Min. 0.5% Beet Pulp), Minerals, Vegetables (Min. 0.5% Chicory) .Antioxidants: Bha (E320), Bht (E321), Propyl Gallate (E310). EC Additives: Antioxidants and Preservatives..Vitamin A, Vitamin D3, Vitamin E, Vitamin C

and just for comparison these are the ingredients for Burns Puupy food (from their website):
Contains: Brown Rice, Chicken, White Rice, Oats, Peas, Chicken Oil, Sunflower Oil,Ocean Fish, Seaweed, Minerals & Vitamins

Typical Analysis/100g: Protein 21.0%, Oil 11.0%, Fibre 2.0%, Ash 7.0%, Vit A 10000 iu/kg, Vit D 1500 iu/kg, Vit E 80 iu/kg, Moisture 9%, Copper 15mg/kg, Sodium 0.48%, Calcium 1.6%, Phosphorus 1.0%, Magnesium 0.1%, EFA 3.33%, Carbohydrates 51%

is all quite confusing - but I don't think I would pick Beta puppy (personal choice - not saying is bad, just don't like the look of the ingredients.)

I actually don't feed my dog comercial food very often, but when I do I feed him naturediet with laughing dog mixer or natures harvest with laughing dog mixer (terrier mixer).

So Naturediet puppy is:

Protein: 12% Fibre: 1.5%
Oil: 7% Ash: 1.5%
Moisture: 75%

INGREDIENTS:
Chicken, Lamb, Lamb Tripe, Brown Rice, Carrots, Egg, Natural Ground Bone, Kelp, Vitamins & Minerals

Vit A 1250iu/kg, Vit D3 150 iu/kg, Vit E 20 mg/kg

Laughing dog mixer is 100% Wheatmeal (english Wholemeal Flour)

Just giving info - not saying any of them are bad - but you have to make your choices based on the info you have - and I think lots of people never look at the ingredients

Ive bred three litters and always used beta puppy. I rate it. Then i change to the dr johns when they are old enough. Mine are springers

Thanks for that..

Dont think ill stick with Beta, just get a bag to last him till he's settled then i might move to Burns or JWB.

Either that or ask my vet when he has his second jab but not sure they will have any idea!!!

[/ QUOTE ]

I can pretty much guarantee that your vet will recommend Hills Science Diet, cos Hills seem to have a deal with all veterinary surgeons and they stock their products

Hmm might not bother then, i have read up quite abit on that feed and its not rated much!

[/ QUOTE ]

I must admit it was good at keeping weight on my old greyhound before she got really ill.

As Mum is a breeder I get to try all the stuff she either wins, or wont feed her dogs any more, so mine get all sorts
grin.gif
They seem to thrive on it though

hills and RC are pointless unless you have a specific problem, eg renal, hepatic etc

our girls are on arden grange and fromm, the pup is on arden grange cause of her skin sensitivness and the old girl is on working complete, its cheap and has done our boxers for the last 25 years, its a superb food and we have now become agents for them as we find its really good!

Fromm is originally from the states but gets shipped over here,

only thing i will say is stuff like chum and other 'pet shop' foods cant guarentee the same amounts of stuff in their foods. as its literally chucked into a pot and dished out into bags. the slightly more expensive foods (hills and RC) measure exactly what is in there foods so you are assured of the exact same thing every time, as opposed to having a but more rabbit in one bag and more ash in another!!

its a pain in the bum deciding but the poop produced will tell you how ur guy likes it!! as others have said wean gradually and not straight away or he will get the squits!

Our old lab was always fed Beta (puppy and then adult), he always did really well on it.

With the Ridgeback we started off feeding Beta but he was slightly hyper so I researched the contents of various dog feeds and decided to go for Burns.

It made absolutely no difference to him, cost me a fortune and his farts stunk to high heaven
blush.gif
. I have since put him back on Beta adult and he is doing really well, lovely condition, just right weight wise and has calmed down a lot (think that may be due to being de-balled though
wink.gif
)

I won't change from Beta now

Hi,
i know little about beta, but the most important thing is to look at the ingredients. Don't pick one that says animal derivatives because thats anything from the animal, meat derivatives are ok. Look for ones that dont have artificial colours, flavours and preservatives as these can often make dogs hyper. I'm a VN and started my dog on royal canin which i found has a strong smell, then swapped to james wellbeloved - good but dog went off it despite attempts to keep going, hills was good but more expensive and dog went off that too - now on Arden grange dog really likes it and she's got more controllable energy than on any of the others -still bouncing though. Its cheap too. Lamb and rice is cheapest. She's got a bit of a sensitive tum too and this seems to agree with it.
