Ah just returned from the BETA International Show, the Equine industry's main expo in the UK

So had a lovely day, saw all the people we needed to - Dad spent ages talking to Monty Roberts, who was there to sell a new saddle pad; but they ended up talking about all sorts including fly fishing!

The pad was an interesting memory foam version, with thinner edges to allow the horse to move under the pad.

Matt Ryan was stand hopping and was there to offer advice on Haygain and supastuds.

The new products that stuck out for me were some "interesting" stirrups and leathers by Kvall
Http://www.kvall.fr
They offer a totally flat platform for the rider, but are indeed a bit strange in appearance. My pondering for the day is why do riders use stirrups which generally have smaller bearing surface than your average bicycle pedal, when we are expected to move more than a cyclist?

The idea behind the kvall system is to give you a flat surface to "surf" the movements of the horse.

So in a crazy moment I bought a pair to try, so if I am brave enough to be seen in public, may be coming to a BSJA show near you!

The other product was the Spursuader, a different kind of spur, in the vein of the rollerballs desgined not to mark your horse and to be that spur you can use on all horses without thinking about changing. Currently only legal for US, Candian and FEI competitions, but they are lobbying the bodies for approval in all disciplines.

Not sure whether they are too soft, but I like the idea of any spur that is humane versus the traditional POW variety

So a very interesting day and these are the products that stood out for me (not connected with in any way btw!)

Yep Spanish sitrrups definitely offer a bigger flat platform, but these have 2 straps and don't pivot at all, whereas spanish / camargue style still break in front of the arch of the foot.

The principle is a triangle to give you a super strong base, well at least that's the theory!

Yep back strap pops off its metal rod (kind of popper system) with relatively little pressure. Looks fine for safety, but wondering whether it may come apart when not needed (watch this space!)

OK, I am going to have to come over and see them in action as I am feeling a little baffled! I wonder whether they are something that would benefit me and my super bad screwed ankles?!

I would love to try those stirrups, only out of curiosity to see if they changed your leg drastically. I'm not keen on western stirrups that keep your toe in so these may be weird, also, do they come in different foot sizes or are the adjustable to fit each riders feet? Reports please!

sorry to hijack, but what bit does that horse have in ? never seen anything like it before with the what looks like metal as a curb strap type thing.. :S (you can probably tell all of my horses have been snaffle mouthed

Very interesting "stirrups" would def be intersted to see how you egt on with them

Well their website links you to a site where you can buy them for €155 delivered to the UK

I don't think that's bad considering it includes leathers, and all straps. Far cheaper than the freedom stirrups.

There appear to be 4 foot sizes based on shoe size.

Some of the 'new' items were a bit

The hoofpick with the light had to be my all time fave!

Glad I wasn't the only 'mere mortal' celeb spotting!

I did find it a lot smaller this year than in previous years though.

Re the bit and quite prepared to be corrected but it looks like a sweet iron snaffle with a tongue tie.

Also very interested in feedback on the stirrups.

Did anyone see the company with the mechanical horses ?(that have been advertised in all the mags)
At one point, one of their salesmen was playing a laser shooting game on a big screen while 'cantering' along on his mechanical horse...weird!
The blurb on the stand said that the horses can be set up to help you practice for rodeo riding...weirder still!

I was there on Monday - spotted Clayton and Tim Stockdale but I travelled up with Matt so does that mean I win?

Did you have a go in the stirrups, CSJ? I had a quick sit and thought they felt really odd, but I can see the sense in them, will be interested to know how you get on. And I loved the Fortis mechanical horses (for exercise, don't you know) didn't have the guts to get on one but they looked fun and everyone who had a go looked like they were having a great time

Big, though, wouldn't be much room for anything else in your living room...

would the stirrups be BE legal?

[/ QUOTE ]

i doubt it, unless they are super-quick release. anything that could keep you secured to the horse for even a nanosecond is not a great idea if things start going really pear-shaped...

Right will work backwards on this one:

only_me - No discipline sets any guidelines on stirrups, they are safe so don't see why you couldn't compete in them.

Booboos - the €155 is including delivery and leather leathers! So for £135 you get nice leather bonded leathers and the stirrups. Bear in mind Sprenger Bow Balance are £140 without leathers!

TableDancer - you missed Tina Fletcher who was there (know that as she was supposed to be teaching me!)

ironhorse - I was too wussy to sit on robo cob, plus the guy didn't seem to be there half the time, missed the shooting, that would have been cool!

AliBear - Why do we contort our legs and put the heel down? The answer is to get a secure lower leg and to use the angles to get the most stability possible. Now imagine you had a flat platform - you cannot pivot onto your toe and your lower leg is secure, therefore no need to put the heel down. Although you can alter the platform to put heels down if preferred

WoopsiiD - Oh I missed the hoofpick with light, which stand had that?

Did they tell you when those spur things will come to this country? Also i take it, if you did buy a pair from america it wouldn't be legal for BS yet?

I enjoyed BETA this year, lots of interesting things to look forward to. On the funny side, we bought 5 boxes of those hoof picks with lights, what a good idea. Tried one when I got back to the yard last night as remarkably good. Going to use them as promos

Spurs will be in the country in about 3-6 month and distributed by Shires, the manufacturer is trying to get BS, BD, BE (poss RC?) to approve them in competition

Who made the hoof picks, and definitely didn't see them at all?
