for obvious reasons tis hasnt really been mentioned so just wanted to say that bettina hoy's test yesterday was a thing of beauty and fair play to her for withdrawing when she had a winning chance. i think sometimes we forget she has been european champion twice and really only a mad moment cost her an olympic title. maybe because of the old england v germany thing we dont give her the credit she deserves.
 
I've thought for years that she is an absolute joy to watch. She seems to have rotten luck at times, but a wonderful relationship with Ringwood Cockatoo, even if he is a bit of a monkey at times.
 
Bettina was once doing a test in the arean next to me at Withington (many years ago now).. we started and finished at kind of the same time... when i came out, i asked my friends/followers how they thought i'd done.. no one was able to answer, as they were so mesmerised by Bettina's test, they never saw one second of mine

I totally agree with you - she is such a lovely dressage rider and I enjoyed watching her test yesterday. She made the flying changes look effortless!
 
Yes, Bettina's test was brilliant. But she didn't withdraw; she retired after she had five or six showjumps down and didn't have a chance at winning. Having said that, she was very brave to have gone in at all after Mary's accident.
 
I think Bettina was very very brave to go out there and I think what she did was exctly the right thing.

I was very suprised when she went in, but to me when she retired, how quickly after the last showjump that it was always her plan. Very good for her for doing that I think it helped in a way.

She did really need to jump i feel as people had paid to see her, as horrible as that sounds given the circumstances.

I have real respect for what she did.
 
I admire her for going in and jumping at all after the accident though I do believe she did plan to retire after the sj part.

Cockatoo is normally a very good showjumper and from what I understand Bettina was visable shaken by Mary's fall and thus probably wasn't in the right frame of mind to sj to her best.
 
well said wishful thinking as i also iwould just like to mention that Bettina was in bits before she started jumping, for obvious reasons, and only jumped at all i hear because she believed it would be unfair on the public and organisers not to start at all.
Frankly on a post like this if you can say something nice then say nothing at all, you are entitled to your opinions, but there are times to keep your mouth shut and this was one of them.
I thought she was incredibly brave to even try to jump (and i believe her dressage was in the lead at that time) , when she has also been a position where she lost a horse unexpectedly. my point was that even the lure of significant money (and as Sunflower pointed out it was substantial even for the placed horses) did not disuade her from making her choice.

What are you on?
No one has been horrible about Bettina on this thread. A couple of corrections that she (quite rightly) retired rather than withdrew which is just a simple fact. She was in the worst situation possible and made 100% the correct decision in my opinion.

the implication of this statement which was before someone else pointed out how upset she was before she jumped was that she didnt go go cos she had no chance.
i knew whan i originally posted how distresssed she was and also that most likely because of that, she had had several showjumps down, but i didnt feel the need to say that in the OP. my point being if you want me to be completely blunt, that far from being the german stereotypical ice maiden bettina is a brave and sensitive lady who derserves more credit than she often gets.
if i read an OP like that i would either agree with it or not post. there was no need for an in depth analysis.
 
oh and as for whether she retired or withdrew what difference does that make? the end result is the same i got a mouthful here the otherday on something called oneup manship or something. So what was all this point correcting then.
there was no need to even slightly imply that she was only thinking about the money.
 
lucretia, i honestly don't think anyone implied anything about the money. obviously if she had been thinking about the money, she'd have carried on and had a crack at the xc. i haven't seen any criticism on here of what she did, i think she was immensely brave to go out and do the sj after what had just happened, and very generous to do it for, basically, the organisers and the crowds, and so obviously not for herself. she has gone up a lot in my estimation. i don't think you need to defend her from anyone in this thread!
 
Well for one, being a journalist, I am sure even you would agree that reporting correct facts is usually beneficial to be taken seriously. And to that end there is a difference between withdrawing and retiring.

You also said she was in with a chance of winning. Again incorrect, with 6 fences down she stood no chance of beating Oli IMO.

I cannot see any implication she was thinking of the money. If she were thinking of the money she would have continued onto the XC.

This arguement seems to have arisen from your dislike of Bossanova and it is your posts that are starting to detract from what I think was your initial goal of highlighting Bettinas bloody good test and subsequent honourable actions in the jumping.

I will leave this thread now before it deteriorates further.

I don't even understand why there is an argument as no one criticised BH, and I'm sure she herself has better things to do than worry about what someone anonymous on an internet forum *might* have implied about her horse. I also don't understand how it could be suggested that the comment "I understand the horse jumped poorly" (which sounds like a question to me anyway) can possibly be construed as a slight against BH. It is a comment on how the horse went, and i have no doubt that all horses have off days, even when they're being ridden by someone like her.

But it wasn't Wishfulthinking who said that so it was wrong of you to have a go at her for it.

ETS: I retract earlier statement as I now see it wasn't Wishfulthinking you were addressing (although it did seem that way at first)

TBH I don't think Boss's statement was particularly insensitive
