Could of had a real disaster today- we have just started breaking my 3 year old filly to drive, bought a cheap harness off of e-bay to break her with - was brand new but only cost about £100 - so just long reining her in it for last week or so - then today tied an empty 5 gallon water cannister to the back by a long piece of webbing (under advice of someone who breaks for a living to get them used to something following them) - she ran round a few times scared then bucked and double barrelled the cannister, not only did the cannister fly accross the paddock but so did half of the harness it completely snapped in half both of the tracers, good job she wern't in a cart and out on the roads !!!! bit lesson learnt - you only get what you pay for .......................

There ought to be safety standards available for good quality tack to be marked with. Makes me cringe when you see someone with a shiny new drum dyed saddle or bridle. Rotten stuff..... Would've thought cheap harness would be ok for longreining though - so thanks for the warning, I'll not use it on mine now

TBH I would having had a bolting pony followed by a tyre I really wish that had broke. - He was fine afterwards thankfully.

It might also be better to have the canister not so close that she could kick it I suppose.

The cannister started off out far enough but of course it bounces about as she charges round so it bounced in and hit her heels thats when she booted it accross the paddock with half her harness.

Thank goodness your pony was ok - its not a lot of fun this breaking to drive lark !

Better that it broke though than her getting caught in it and it not breaking a leg or something!

I thought that the point of leather tack well maintained was that it would break in an accident!

Ditto!

Having been at a demo and watched a Master Saddler take apart a cheap saddle--looked OK on the outside
The tree was cobbled together in what looked like bits of pallet wood.....
dont think I need to go on
