Beware of loaning!

I was heartbroken when i got a phone call in april on a thursday night saying i had "abused" "mistreated" my loan pony and they where picking him up saturday morning.
Now i look after my ponies to the point where they are spoit. They get walks in the countryside, grazed inhand, not ridden, lunged to keep a perfect weight. Stabled at night during the winter, groomed everyday and lots of attention.
So obviously i was very upset that they where claiming the pony i loved so much i was hurting?!

Is this a pony whos mistreated .. ?

Anyways i thought it was a one off. Lesson learnt!
But i was talking to a mate today and exactly the same thing has happend to her and ive heard of it happening before.

I know theres genuine people out there who want the best for their horses. Not just sombody to look after and pay for them

sadly that is a bit of a sweeping generalisation!! It sounds like you did have a bad experience....however, what you have to remember is loaning is a two way agreement.

Had you been unable to keep the pony for any reason you could also have sent it back anytime to suit you.

The big no no in your situation is the loaner saying it was mistreated, have they ANY foundation for this?? What did they say it was mistreated in??

There are good arrangements out there and I have always been very fortunate that I have loaned horses in and loaned out without any horrible experiences.

It sounds as if your owner of pony didnt have the guts to just be honest and say they wanted pony back for whatever reason and just use an excuse of "mistreated" rather than be truthful with you.

Key to loaning, set the ground rules, put it in writing, check check and check again, and all parties must be entirely up front with each other.

If you had non ridden loan arrangement, there are loads of charities out there who would love a home like yours sounds!!

do some of these people not have eyes? Sorry to hear about that, some people clearly cant appreciate the decent homes that very few people will offer :/

Though I once knew some people who wanted a horse, got one on loan. Few weeks later, woman turned up on the yard and started ranting about how her horse was clearly being mistreated (ok, the loaners were pretty novice but they weren't doing a bad job and horse was fine) and took him back. Also made a major fuss that one of his rugs was ripped and that he'd lost an overreach boot.... even though the girls gave her the money for them!
Turns out she'd been on holiday and just wanted the horse looking after without having to pay anyone!! o.o

looks fine to me, just looks like he wants your childs pockets.

Do beware though , my horse of 13 years was out on loan and was not treated as I would have liked, has taken over a year to get him back to normal.

Why did they say you were not looking after him? he looks fine to me

There are also good loaners out there.
My loan horse recently broke (her tendoncame out of the sheaf, leading her to be lame if ridden), the lady who owned her was brilliant with me, I rung her in tears when I found out, worried as I didn't know how to cope, instead of telling me off or trying to blame me she took it all very calmly and took her back. This might sound like I chickened out but my facilities were not fantastic and I had no experience (unlike her who had gone through it all before) I now visit as often as I can and we are both still in contact and friends! Yes, there are bad people out there who will just want you to pay and do all the hard work, but I bet for every one of them, there are 2 or 3 fantastic loaners!

P.S. sorry for you and your friend, it must be heartbreaking!

The loan was sept - april so i had a suspiscion (as they said they had no winter grazing) that it was just for the winter. We had a writen agreement. And they had no proof at all

The pony was so sweet and thats my cousin who was only 2 at the time. He was more heartbroken than me, he loved that pony so much and still asks for him

Yeah theres genuine loaners but im never going down that road again unless its a chairty, as i know they wont take them back fo no good reason!

Oh .. and was a non ridden agreement, i dont ride i only wanted a pony to play with lunge/longrein and walk out and some inhand showing. I dont like riding to be honest. Ive got a ex broodmare welsh d x and a companion welsh a which is unrideable!

Sorry you had a bad experience, it does work both ways though, I am terrified of getting someone who is awful and mistreats her, or does what she is not capable of or something

I'm also worried about her getting handed back to me at a moments notice, when I potentially have a new horse. As I say, its a shame a potential very good loan home will now be wasted due to ignorant people

I have had my mare on loan for nearly 4 yrs and there has been no probs. Her owner lives in Milton Keynes and I live in Surrey she has been down to see her about 5 - 6 times and is happy with everything.
She even had her back for 6 months when my Mum died a couple of yrs ago.
This is my first loan horse and I would defo think about doing it again.
My loan mare will soon be all mine though as her owner said if I wanted to buy her I could for a very cheap price so my other half knows what my xmas pressie will be lol x.
