Official release from the TRF:

Members of the Trail Riders Fellowship: the organisation that promotes the use of legal carriageways by road-legal motorcycles; are reporting an increasing number of encounters with deliberately scattered nails and concealed nail boards on Byways Open to All Traffic in England and Wales.
Such devices will normally only cause a temporary inconvenience to motorcyclists (our tyres are often tough enough to roll over such obstructions without damage and punctures are easily fixed), but they do have potential to cause possibly lethal injury to walkers, horses and horse riders, plus great inconvenience to cyclists.
Landowners should be alert to the placing of such devices on rights of way crossing ‘their’ land, as they may be liable under law for any injury or loss caused whether such devices were placed with their knowledge or not.
TRF members have been asked to report all such devices they encounter to the police, so to avoid trouble landowners should arrange regular and frequent inspection of rights of way crossing their property.

If you encounter such devices, please remove/report them.

If the police won't take it seriously, then the RSPCA will.

Remember this devices will seriously injure any horse of pony that stands on them. You are likely to be thrown by the animal if you are riding it. If you stand on such a device it will inflict a serous injury on you.

That is absolutely and completely disgusting. Why the hell would anyone want to do something like that. If a nail went in too far that could be the end of the horse if some of the internal structures got infected.

Do you have any idea where in the country these incidents have been taking place? Thank you.

Sorry not to have got back to you before.

Surrey/Hants, it seems.

People are a little wary of coming forward at the mo, but watch this space (and watch where your horse puts its hooves).

Crumbs how blasted scary is that, as if us horse riders dont have enought to be looking out for.
so now we also need as well as the eyes in the back of our heads for the cyclists and runners that all of a sudden appear, a set in our chin so that we can also be lookig at the ground for nails that some pillock has decided to leave there with the obvious intention to maim
Sorry for the flippancy
Thanks for the warning

Happening on the Isle of Man, now!

I wonder if the people doing this realise the consequences of their actions?

Ride safe, everyone!

WARNING! Idiot sabotages Manx tracks!
Email from the forestry board today:10 September 2010

Just a quick warning to all green lane users.

The Police have informed me that some nutter has been placing homemade ‘Stinger’ type devices on various green way roads. Basically, the devices are blocks of wood with 6 inch nails driven through in all directions!

It doesn’t bare thinking about the damage that could be caused to man or beast.

Please remain vigilant and pass this message on!

Sickening, almost sounds like kids after watching TV shows about traffic cops.

Thank you TRF for once again helping riders, great organisation. Have worked with them through Endurance GB where they marked our ride, lovely people & very responsible motorcyclists.

Thanks for posting this Pampera. TRF do a great job helping us out!

Who are you, btw, as we fence judge at a lot of events and may have met you :) (PM if preferred of course!)

Hi,

My names Richard Simpson, I ride a blue Gas Gas Pampera 250 (hence the name) at horse trials. I do various events in Gloucestershire and at David Broome's place in Chepstow. I'm also the national pr person for the TRF.

We had a nice article done on us in the current issue of Trail Bike Magazine (TBM) which featured the Endurance GB Summer Solstice event in Cirencester Park, which Gloucester TRF provide the course marking and rapid support service for.

At horse trials, the fence judges are always very friendly and we are happy to give you support.

Please, if there are proposals to introduce Traffic Regulation Orders in your area to ban trail riders from byways, can you put in a good word for us. Non horse people often complain that 'scamblers' on the lane will frighten the horses. A lot of people flat don't believe that our trail bikes run happily alongside horses at these events and that (in my experience) horse riders and trail riders get on very well in the countryside.

See you next season!

Best wishes and happy riding

Pampera

Hello! *waves*

I think we're in a different area - we usually see Colin and his team. We do occasionally venture into deepest darkest Gloucestershire so may have seen you. We're the ones with the black and tan terrier puppy (everyone remembers meeting her, she tries to run in front of the bikes...).

I haven't seen horses worried by trail bikes at these events at all - but that said, you're always very sensible and keep your distance. I dare say there are a few in the minority who do upset horses who have sadly given the rest of you a bad name :( I'm not aware of any proposals around here, but I'll keep my eyes out.

Have a good winter :)

Hello,

It may be that our paths haven't crossed yet.

Our main contact for horse events is a lady called Jackie.

She's actually a professional horse trainer. She and her partner Damon do a lot of events: they ride a pair of 250cc Hondas.

Have a good winter.

Richard
