This has just appeared on my facebook page... You wouldn't think that a smooth edged clip could cause such a nasty injury...

Just goes to show what damage can be caused by something I bet most of use every day, I know I have these attached to haynets to hang them up with...

Ouch! Have heard of this happening with a bottom lip too. I guess there will always be freak accidents but might be sensible to try a different type of clip for haynets. We don't use them but a friend does and I will alert her.
 
Can I ask where this pic came from - I know you say fb but was it through a friend of yours on there? Just ask because I know the owner of this horse!
 
I am rather surprised that the clip came free from the wall as opposed to ripping free from the poor horse!

Why I never, ever leave my boy with his headcollar on unattended in his stable. So easy to get it caught on his stable door catch, doesn't bear thinking about if he paniced.
 
I'm sure i have been told in the past to put these with the opening half facing the wall (its harder to hang buckets when they are that way round unfortunately) but supposedly it will help stop things like this? poor guy, looks very very sore
 
That's a nose ring and a half! :p poor horse, looks painful, wouldn't want that to happen to me! Lets hope he has a speedy recovery! :)

I'm also really careful about which way I put lead ropes on headcollars if it's those clips - always alway from the horse's chin :( seen something very similar happen as a horse pulled away whilst being caught and the clip ripped through its chin :(
 
Whilst this looks quite shocking - and lets face it if you walked in a found your horse like this it would make you panic a bit - it really is not as bad as it looks.

I was in the bath one night when a friend phoned me to come and get her horse out of the field and that she had phoned the vet (quite a tough friend at that)

So up I went and found my friend in a bit of a state, went into the field and got the horse to find it had caught its nostril on something in the hedge and ripped it a good 7-8 inches up towards its eye and it was just flapping about.

If it had been my horse I would have been as bad as my friend but as it wasn't I did find it very interesting.

Vet arrived and it took a couple of hours to staple everything together - horses heads are very heavy on your shoulder by the way once they are sedated!

Three days later you would have been amazed at how much it had healed - think it was 10 days later and the staples came out and it was totally healed

Now you would not know it had happened at all, so if anything like this happens to you try not to panic too much, though easier said than done

Ouch! Yes me too - would have thought the ring would have ripped from the horse first too. Here's to a speedy recovery (and a note to us all to use rings instead!)
 
My friend had this happen recently but the clip did not come free, he know has a lump rather like Nanny McPhee. In racing I saw a few of these and the yard I worked for swopped to Z clips that can be bought from Horse Reqs for hanging buckets.
 
A horse on my yard has just done a similar injury. Her owner clips her door shut at night because she is an escape artist, she chews and pulls on the clip trying to get it off. Last week she managed to rip a hole inside her mouth from the clip, very nasty

This, kids, is why you should always get piercings done by a professional!! :D

Seriously though, poor horsey.
