This is an email i received regarding my pony for sale....BEWARE.
this type of scam was on watch dog a few weeks ago. THANKYOU WATCHDOG!!!!!

EMAIL:
Hello,
Thanks for the email.I am still interested and to let you know that I am willing to pay the 1500 pounds.I will like you to know that i am unable to make calls right now because of the area i am.Right now i'm out of town on a business trip to Lyn Oslo, though you don't have to worry about payment and pick up,I'll handle that.Pls consider it sold to me and pls don't entertain any other offers. This will be similar to a local pickup. As for payment,I will instruct my accountant to issue you a Check of 3,500 pounds as i am not around at the moment.Once you get the Check kindly clear it at your Bank and then wire the excess funds to my shipper via western union after deducting your 1500 pounds and an extra 100 pounds i am offering you as dash for keeping it down for my shipper.Pls let me know if i can trust you in wiring the excess funds to my shipper the same day you cash the Cheque.

Note: My shipper will pick up some other Automobiles ,including these i am buying from you,so this is why his shipping fee is that much.

This way you will be free from shipping hastles and stress, as my shipper will come over to your place for collection once he receives the funds so if you are okay with this way of arrangement, pls mail me your full details such as your:

1)Full Names (how it should appear on check)
2)Postal address
3)Phone number) .

I will awaiting your details so that my client can send you the payment.Hope to hear from you soon and have a nice day.
regards,
Dave.

What is the scam then? I've had similar emails regarding a car I have for sale and I would consider doing it (I wouldn't for a pony by the way!)
How would it effect me?

Pls let me know if i can trust you in wiring the excess funds to my shipper the same day you cash the Cheque.

The cheque will bounce, thus you would lose £2000. They will probably not bother to collect the goods too as they already have your cash!!

When you get the cheque, bankers draft (whatever they're offering) and pay it into your account, it will look like it clears, then you send off the excess amount to their "shipper" or whoever they ask you to. A few days later you'll get a letter/phone call from your bank, telling you that the original cheque or bankers draft was fake and all the money disappears from your account, leaving you out of pocket for the amount you sold the item (car, horse etc) for, and usually they pick up the item as well, so you've lost both.

OK fair enough, sorry I didn't read that bit. The ones I have had have said that once it clears wire the money to the agent than they will collect the car.

I wouldn't give the cash unless the bank verifyed the cheque had cleared and it was geniune.
I thought it was a way of money laundering.
I don't think I'd do it anyway cos knowing my luck i'd be arrested!!

YEP - very similar to an email reply I had for a quad bike I am selling, this is from someone going by the name of Anthonio White, I figured it was suspect as I received an enquiry from this person within minutes of the bike going live on net, the bike isn't advertising for £1,200 so thought that was very odd:

I will have to inform you that I am okay with the price of the ITEMs (£1,200)and the condition terms are also okay with me,For the Collection from your location,I have my SHIPPER that will come over for the pick up from your location as soon as we seal this Transaction from your end.Do e-mail me your (FULL NAME ON CHEQUE,CONTACT ADDRESS,MOBILE & LANDLINE PHONE NUMBER)For the payment arrangement,I will be paying by Cheque and i will wait for the cheque to clear before the pick upfrom your location. I have a CLIENT of my that is owning me some Fund in United Kingdom that will issue you the cheque of (£3,500)as soon as you receive the cheque and clear from the bank, you will deduct the cost of the ADVERT and the remaining balance will be send to the Shipper through WESTERN UNION MONEY TRANSFER for the pick up from your location. If this is okay by you,do e-mail me the following detail FULL NAME ON CHEQUE:
CONTACTED ADDRESS:
MOBILE&LANDLINES PHONE NUMBER: or the cheque to be made out to you. Hope to read from you soonest..NB:- I will wait for the cheque to clear before the pick up.I will like you to consider the item sold to me ok,I will compensate you with £50 for you to remove the advert from the site.,Also if you receive any e-mail related to this kindly ignore it because it may be from my partner whom i sent to search for this .
