I've just put a saddle on various sites for sale. Within half an hour somebody asked if it was still available. Picture was of two late 60s ladies.........well let's just say they didn't look like riders, and especially not in a 16.5" saddle. ( No disrespect to anybody in that age group on here, I'm in my 60s myself. ) I confirmed it was still available . Without asking any questions at all the person said they would buy it. I'm in Berkshire and had said collection only. They are allegedly in Leeds. 😶

Said they'd like to come and collect it (what, from Leeds??) but were busy today so would send money with a courier, who would collect it. Huge red flags waving all over the place. I checked out this sort of transaction online, and sure enough, it's a scam. And the courier they mentioned won't accept any packages containing cash. So I thought I'd have a bit of fun.

Me: It's a martingale saddle that needs to be secured with snaffles. Is that what you are looking for?
Scammer: Yes

Unfortunately that pretty much closed down the conversation, as I was hoping to waste a bit more of their time, so I told them to go scam somebody else.

So if you're selling something, be careful everybody!

We had them trying to get personal details. What is your phone number? I need your email to send the money, what address am I picking up the goods from?

We were selling a high end motorbike and the profile picture was of a girl in her 20,s. Yeah right sweetheart.

Yes, apparently the scam could be one of several things - trying to get your details; offloading funny money; or getting you to pay a fee before the courier will turn up.

I had this when selling actual large bits of furniture. I mean pardon me?!

guaranteed the first 6 replies you get will be scammers. They must catch some poor s*da out otherwise there’d be no point.

I don’t get what the scam is. I had posted my bedroom furniture and got several texts saying can I post it to various places via gumtree courier, that they will pay immediately via PayPal and send courier. If I had said yes what’s the second step for them? To send me thousands of pounds on PayPal? And claim it back? Lol. I don’t get it.
