YO warned us before we went for a ride this morning about some strange men in the area, asking questions about local livery yards.

I have heard this fourth-hand but it really wouldn't surprise me. Apparently they are finding out where livery yards/riding schools/private properties are where there are horses and then stealing them.

NEVER TELL ANY STRANGERS WHERE YOU KEEP YOUR HORSE - ESPECIALLY IF THEY JUST WALK UP TO YOU ON A RIDE!

Just a warning xxx

yes does sound a bit suspicious

I am always a bit cagey when out hacking but also think chances are if your hacking our lanes its within a couple of miles radius so they could probably find them if they wanted to.

Worrying

Unless you knew our yard was there you wouldn't drive up the lane it's on - there's a better lane that runs parallel to it, and there's nothing else (except the yard) on our lane. We've got CCTV and all sorts so ours should be fine but it's very worrying still

i think this happens everywhere, not too long ago, me and my god daughter was just coming back from a hack, when i noticed a jeep parked up, they were obviously staring at my coloured horse, and i remember seeing them earlier as we set off, it scares me to think that they had been watching us. as we was near to our yard, i turned the opposite way, they then drove off.i still panic now when going out hacking.

I got stopped by gypies asking for directions to a pub after i had given them they then kept asking about my coloured mare where i keep her and age etc. I lied through my teeth then rode her to my house instead of field kept her in my garden for a few hours then led her to field eyeballing every car

as i went.

I think you have to be very careful. I had a funny looking fellow ask about my coloured a couple of years ago. I lied and said she was a lot older than she was and said I dont do much with her because she has got very bad arthritis, all she can manage nowadays is a quick hack around the block, hoping he hadnt seen her cantering earlier!

Having said that, if I am driving around and see new horses in the area, or any horse/horse facilities, I nearly always slow down and have a look, because I am very nosey. I wouldnt dream of stealing a horse or robbing stables, so lets hope a lot of these report are just envious/wishfull/nosey folks like me!

We liveried next to a travellers site and they were always asking about the horses, esp mares and ones up to about 15.2 (easier to hide/useful for breeding).

Its amazing how many of our horses were apparently blessed with terrible gynocological problems or were aged (despite being about 5!)
In the end the 4 Rotties kept the horses safe :-))

Thanks for this, especially as I live locally to you and keep my horses on their own at a privately rented yard. Luckily, the owner of the land lives on site and keeps things locked after dark, but I will certainly keep a watch out.

Worrying thing is that I found out about the yard because of the website - nothing to stop anyone else doing that

I found your yard through a website as well (back when I considered keeping George there). Quite easy to find as it is one of the first that comes up on a google search.
