Bf trimmer or farrier?

Farrier every time. Prefer national qualification etc etc(its a bit like asking to be treated by a doctor.........of medicine or chinese medicine etc etc). Mine does both BF and shoes and as far as I know they have always done both in different towns etc I have lived in. If they dont get another.

I do my own as I have recieved appropriate, and long term training (nit a 4 day course!), which last I heard they were in the process of getting acredited by a university to the same level or slightly higher than tge farriers qualification, as they want their training to b recognized, and to make the industry accountable.
They were also looking at doing suitable research studies linked to universities. I also have a degree in biolgical and animal sciences.

I trim for friends or people they know in emergencies, but get fed up feeling like I have to justify why I take longer to do a consult ans trim, so try to avoid trimmining for new people, especially as it takes up my wekend!

I took this route as farriers were making my barefoot horses sore for several days after a trim. I tend to find that trimmers will explain more stuff to u too and make useful recommendations to help with foot care and maintainance.

I have struggled so far to find a farrier that trims barefoot horses with a good balance and not too short, and a lot of shod horses I see have poor feet. However as I don't go out searching for horses done by farriers or trimmers I am inclined to agree that there are good and bad in both profession and I would never use a wannabe trimmer that had actually done very little training!!!

Epauk and UKNHCP are good places to start if u want to find a trimmer in ur area. X

Trimmer because farrier always left my horse with long toes despite constant stumbling and falling over, and stonking sulcus thrush. Always wanted to shoe him without trying to sort the underlying issues. And very quick to lash out if horse got fidgety :(, never ever linked hoof/behavioural problems to diet.

Trimmer takes her time, spotted a massively stretched white line and the thrush within seconds of first look at feet, horse actually starts dozing when she's trimming, a total first !! She's happy to take her time despite being very busy and never rushes.
Advice on diet and the best way to manage horse and horse is looking very good from feet up, where as before he looked good till you got to his feet.
Trimmer is a bit dearer but imo is totally worth the extra cost for her knowledge, time and her patience :)
Love my trimmer, she's great !!!
