Yesterday the man from the BHS inspected our livery yard and we have been given unconditional BHS Approval. It's great I expected to have a few things we had to do but no nothing. He was really thorough, checked all my liveries horses to ensure they were well shod and in good condition. he checked all my fencing, my gates, my stables, my arena and the fire extinguishers, notices etc. We then had to go in and go through my insurance policies for the yard and the contracts including the contracts signed by each livery and their passport information. I was pleasantly surprised that it was so thorough. I was expecting more of an emphasis on health and safety but it was really geared to the horses and ensuring their welfare.

So if anyone wants livery near Dartmoor - not far from Okehampton we are fully approved

Its taken 12 months to get to where we want to but all the effort seems worth it.

You contact the BHS - get them to send you a pack for approved livery yards. In that pack are details of what you need to do, So info on fire equipment, horse first aid, human first aid, rules, contacts, insurance, fencing etc. You then have to have references from customers and vets and then they will send an inspector out to you who will check out everything. You have to pay half your registration fee up front and the rest on approval, but it means you are included in their info packs and to be honest bearing in mind DEFRA is talking about registering livery yards by 2012 I think this is well worth doing with the BHS as I believe that the BHS will run the inspections on behalf of DEFRA as DEFRA have no idea about horses and the BHS already have a recognised registration scheme

You are welcome - and if you want to have your horse somewhere on holiday livery - we are happy to do that too. And also have a lovely holiday let so you can come and stay with your horse on holiday.

All we need now are 2 more liveries and we are full. And even if I say so myself -we have some lovely liveries and no bitchiness - I know miraculous but it's true. Everyone chips in and gets on.

We have five owners and 7 livery horses plus my 5 so 13 in total. Maximum number of horse 16 and we have 32 acres. So loads of grass and loads of turnout - and we are dry, I don't do mud! And I do promise you - no bitchiness.

I don't have a website - yet. Just working on it at the moment, wanted to get everything in place - get the approval and then launch the website. But if you want any info - photos etc or come and see the place you are welcome to PM me and I can forward you anything you want.
