Please take a minute to think about this poll. The BHS is always looking to increase membership, for those of you that are members what do you consider to be the benefits..
...for those that aren't, I would really appreciate an honest view of why you haven't bothered/don't know about it/have allowed membership to lapse

I was up untill february. I had to for my bhs exams. I didnt see a point in renewing my membership it doesnt really offer me anything.

I was a member years ago only so that I could do their xc series, since then I have been out affiliated and hadn't bothered to rejoin, it really doesn't offer a lot of benefits that interest me. However I have joined this year purely because I have decided not to insure my older horse any more and my younger one has vets fees cover only so I wanted the public liability insurance cover both of them.

I've been a member for a long time, from when my old pony became an insurance write-off so I had some cover for her. She has since died and all my horses since have been seperately and fully insured so I have to say I do sometimes wonder why I've been keeping my membership up. I do realise the role of the BHS in training, welfare, RoW etc which I suppose is a benefit to us all in the long term and they probably need the membership money to fund this.

I used to be a gold member when I was riding other people's horses, as I wanted the insurance, and it was cheaper than getting my own cover.
I didn't get any other benefit out of being a member, so cancelled when I got my own horse and no longer needed the insurance.

only joined for insurance benefits being multihorse owner and the SEIB XC qualifiers. Other than that no real benefits....they need to do some more merchanise and marketing!

I don't really know much about it. I'm a member of BD & BSJA so already have their benefits.

I was a member ages ago when I was having a phase of wanting to do my stage 3.

I used to be, mainly because I supported their work and I think if you are into an activity and it has a representative body, then provided the representative body does something useful I'd support them by joining even if I didn't benefit directly.

What turned me off was finding out a bit too much about how it worked internally. I was interested in training and had some issues regarding examinations (some of which still stand), I came to the conclusion they were insoluable because of the internal politics and institutional inertia. I left at the time the BHS 'fell to pieces' and the special interest groups split off. Ultimately I think this was a good thing and even though I know nothing about the BHS in its current form it seems to be doing a good job.

I'm not a member now for no particularly good reason. I suppose I contribute to the sort of things the BHS does in other ways so don't see that as a reason and also I seem to me a member of enough societies not to want to join any more.

member of british riding clubs
support ILPH
Pay NFU for liability insurance
already done my training 25 years ago

so I don't need the insurance, already support an equine charity, am more aligned to riding clubs now than training, hence not really relevant to me tbh.

I'm a Gold member, mainly for the insurance and legal helplines being a multi horse owner as it certainly does help keep insurance costs down.
I also think we need them for the bridleway situation where in a lot of cases, councils are able and more willing to listen as they are members of a recognised national body rather than just you, me and dog makes three.
Have to admit, if they ever put up the cost of being a member, I would have to think again as it's getting a bit dear.

I used to be a member when i was doing my exams but am not anymore as can't afford it and also because i don't agree with some of their teachings.

I became a member as I wanted to do a couple of exams and then was really pleased with the insurance… which is why I will re-new my membership when it expires. I do like the idea of supporting them and am impressed with the literature they provide. for example they sent me all sorts of stuff when I asked for a first horse owners pack. which was really full with excellent info.

I joined for the third party liability but have let it lapse as I am covered in my regular insurance now and I am a BRC member.
I find the cost is prohibitive for both joining and training for exams with the BHS.
I also worked for them for 2 years part time which gave me a little more insight of how they work.
I'm not overly fond of their customer service (same with BD tho and BRC)

I am a member for training reasons, although God knows when Ill take my next exams. Also for the insurance and helpline benefits. Iam also a member of local riding club, and sometimes there are qualifiers for BHS events like the hunter festival thingy, and horse trials..

I am a member for insurance benefit and because I am working my way up to BHSI.
Other: I quite enjoy the discounts on books, videos and coaching clinics (not that they are massive discounts but still helpful).

I've been a member for years, primarily for the insurance benefit but also because it makes sense to support a national organisation that works for all riders/horses/ponies on welfare and access issues amongst others.

As the endurance bodies split off years ago for reasons I never knew, BHS membership is of no benefit to me on a 'sport' level.

Does being in a riding club make you a BHS member? If so as of last weekend I'm a member

No it doesn't but you do get bookshop discount as a BRC member!

I'm a member firstly because I have to be to be on the Register of Instructors. I'm also doing some more exams. But I would be anyway regardless becayse the Insurance cover works out chepaer. I have also used the legal advice too in the past.

I'm a member but not really sure why

At first it was for the insurance and the book shop discount is nice but really I don't think it offers me anything other than a thin, boring magazine and booklets that I hardly ever read let alone use. I don't feel that it caters for the type of horsey person I am now...
