I'm not a member because I honestly cannot see the point in spending £50 a year (or whatever it is) for nothing. The insurance cover is already incorporated into my horse's insurance at a much smaller cost than BHS membership.
Am not a member. I was in the past but purely during BHS exams. It offers me nothing I dont get elsewhere and have to admit that some of the BHS ideas and ways of doing things didnt sit too well with me at one time.
I have a native pony who I do affiliated showing with and have started affiliated dressage. I don't do RC events anymore but even when I did I felt it had little to do with the BHS. I always check the events for my region but there's either nothing on or it doesn't apply to me. It seems very geared to the happy hacker, those with/working towards qualifications or the non-horse owner, I suppose the assumption is that competitive riders have BD, BSJA, BE etc. to cater for their needs... I will remain a member as I want to support the organisation that I feel represents the general horsey community politically as regards access/right of way, welfare etc. I think that the competitions (I think there's an equitation one) for those that only ride at riding schools are a good idea but I wonder what proportion of the membership this caters for...
The British Horse Society represents horse riders at national and local level when negotiating with government and local authorities. The activities of the British Horse Society Include Access (improving the Bridleways and Rights of Ways network for horse riders and carridge drivers), Safety (Road Safety Courses and Tests, Horse Crossings across busy roads) Welfare and Training (Ensuring people have access to training) and there are many more things that the BHS does.
Every County has a local BHS committee which act upon the interests of local riders in the county. BHS members are encouraged to join the local County Committee and give input in to it.
There are many people who do volunteer work for the BHS and give up much of their free time for the benefit of other horse riders.
There are 4,000,000 people in Great Britain that ride regularly but only 60,000 are members of the British Horse Society.
If every horse rider was a member of the BHS they would be a very much more powerfull organisation when negotiating with government and local authorities.
As a BHS Volunteer I spend many hours of my spare time improving the bridleway network of North Hertfordshire and also attending to road safety matters. Many local riders benefit from the work I do.
I used to be a member as I took my stage 1 and I needed insurance. After my stage 1 I didnt see the point in taking anymore exams as I couldnt afford to and I didnt want horses to be my career, just my hobby. I joined BD and got insurance from them so didnt renew my BHS membership.
I didnt get anything from it, all I got was a useless magazine which I never read anyway.
Primary reason I joined is that I was meant to do all my exams but only did stage 1 in the end.
Insurance is useful though as I dont always ride through my RS so if anything happens whilst I'm hacking out other peoples' horses, atleast I've got it.
Not sure if I'll renew this year as it'll be £50 - depends how much riding I'm doing I think
Nope, never been a member because I dont see it of benefit to me. Ive only just noticed some very occassional training happening nearish me but to be honest, I can use the same trainers outwith BHS training! Im in a number of clubs / societies so dont need the insurance cover from them.
I joined partly for the insurance, and also because I thought I might do the exams. Also it was a Christmas present from my mum, and i've just continued to renew the membership each year.
The British Horse Society is the only national equestrian organisation that strives to improve the Bridleway (Rights of Way) network for horse riders and carriage drivers and also deals with road safety issues. With the increased pressure of housing development across the United Kingdom it is important that this work continues and this is why becoming a member of the BHS is so important. The more members that it has the higher the percentage of horse riders it can state it represents. This is very important when dealing and negotiating with government and local authorities. So please join and help us help you.
I'm a member because I am training for my exams and then will stay a member as will be a registered instructor.
I like the 3rd party insurance but have this on my ponio's insurance anyway so wouldn't join just for that.
Other than for instructing/exams, I can't see what the BHS offers me personally, however I think the work it does is very valuable and I'm happy to hand my subscription over each year.
