Iv just been on their web site and searched through the horses for homing as iv never heard off this scheme before.
A lot off the companions are old. There's a 27 yr old who has been owned for 21 years and they are now trying to home him
Reading through the scheme a contract is set up to sell the horses for £1 and the horse is never owned by the bhs, they are just bringing sellers, buyers together. They also check the homes for £75.
What's peoples thoughts on this?
Anybody been involved in it?
Also what's stopping a person with intentions to sell the horse on for a profit if they get through the home check and buy for £1.
Just interested in peoples views on this on.

My views on some off the companions being offered is that people are passing the buck off a old horse but all in all could be good if it alls goes well.

My view on rehoming very elderly horses is that you shouldn't.

I know it's tough but if you can't give them a secure retirement then sadly, it's time to pts......not an easy option. JMHO.

Agree with post above. Its not fair to an elderly horse to uproot it and take it away from the routine its used to; and IMO a lot of owners are passing the responsibility of looking after their poor old horses to other people when frankly they need to make tough choices.

It would be good if this scheme were to work, BUT fraught with difficulties IMO.

I'll be the third person here to state you shouldn't try and rehome an old horse. The owner should face up to their final duty as owner of an elderly horse. Again, just my humble opinion of course. It seems a number of other people think differently seeing as how they are trying to get rid of their oldies.

A lovely kind hearted scheme probably set up with the best of intentions, but I would be concerned it is vulnerable to being abused by the unscrupulous...

really not sure such a scheme would be effective.

i actually took on a horse who had been in the same home 23 years... the ladies uncle bred him, he lost his mum early on and was then heand reared, she then had him from 3 to 23.... her new husband wanted a newer model and she let him (my hubby would be out of the door if he tried that with me!)
i think he was very lucky that to come to me, we had a good few years hacking and now he's living his retirement out with my other 28 year old. hes now also 28 and seems very happy with life.
it would have been so easy though for him to end up in the wrong hands, maybe be sold on as younger etc.

i agree with the old horse rehoming thing

i came accorss a 30 year old horse being re-homed on preloved the other day - i emailed as i know a few people who could possibly take it.

very sad. and also very selfish people not imo doing the right thing for their horses (not them).

The way I read it, the BHS will act as a go-between when people have unexpectedly found themselves unable to cope and need to rehome their horse, through changed circumstances or illness for example.

In which case I think it's a great idea; surely if the BHS can match homes being offered with available horses, and vet them accordingly, it will reduce the likelyhood of horses being passed from pillar to post later on?

Incidentally, I actually know one of the horses offered on the site. Her only 'problem' was a totally inexperienced owner who is frightened of her. Luckily the mare is too sweet natured to take much advantage of this so hasn't been spoiled, but her education is a little retarded as a result.
She would make a fabulous allrounder for someone.

I think the home check idea is good bit not the selling of horses.
I really didnt thing the BHS would do this as they are all for finding the right home but as you said whats stopping someone selling a horse on?

Is that a coloured mare by any chance?

it sounds like basically the charity is going to home-check for horses that would otherwise go in the free-ads and be given away anyway, but without a home check.

I'm not saying the horses should be given away, but if its their fate either way, at least a charity is home-checking for them. That won't ensure 100% that they don't get sold on but I think for the most part it will be found that people willing to be home-checked and take on an elderly horse to begin with through that process will be mostly honest sort. Scumbags will just Free to Good Home Horses and skip the home check process.

I cannot believe the 27 year old's owner is trying to rehome him. Take a look at him poor old chap; the last thing he needs is a journey to a new/strange environment & the stress of mixing with a new crowd where in all likelyhood he'd be bottom of the pile. They should do the best by him after all the years they've had him & all he's given.

I don't normally comment on these emotive threads, but I can't ignore the plight of this poor guy.
