I've done a princes trust one riding across the andes from Argentina to Chile, not much of a challenge riding wise as in walk (main job is not to unbalance your horse on difficult terrain). Vertigo, altitude sickness and difficult (very steep) terrain were the most challenging parts. An incredible ride, would thoroughly recommend.
Oh interested as well if anyone been to one! If so, my question is how feasible is it to raise so much money?!! I'm assuming you only raise a bit and just pay the rest. I am very very interested in the Peru one and debating whether to go for it, just need to confirm dates.
Thanks! I have signed up for the India one and am now in full blown panic mode! Never camped before and hate ridig strange horses!!! How did you get your sponsorship target?
I've not done a challenge ride but I have done the Iceland ride that they do for the challenge directly with an Icelandic company that does the same ride, so for that one:-
Get plenty of hours riding in before you go so that you are used to riding for several hours on consecutive days.
A bottle of spirits will make you very popular!
Take plenty of Ibuprofen gel and sunscreen (I got horrendous sunburn on my nose and mouth which were the only bits sticking out of my waterproofs!)
I saved up and paid for all of the costs of mine like I would a big holiday. I think asking people to sponsor you to go on holiday is a bit cheeky so I made sure any sponsorship went to the charity, not to paying for the trip.
I always fancied doing the India ride, and sent off for the details. I too thought it was a bit much to ask people to pay for my holiday, so I was prepared to pay the whole amount. When I read the itinery though, I realised that I had left it too late as I am probably too old and past riding all day and camping out in the desert for a few nights.
If I do ever get to India on a riding holiday (which I am beginning to doubt now) it will be for a HOLIDAY, not an endurance test!
I think it would be an amazing experience though, and you would be going on something well organised. A trip of a lifetime.
I think you'll love the BHS Challenge ride to India. I've not done it myself but I do work with the stables and hotel that organise that ride and they are fabulous.
The Marwari horses can be fairly spritely and have fairly fast, choppy trots according to most, so that takes a bit of getting used to. They also have sensitive mouths and I believe riders there are asked to ride with a very loose rein. The horses are very well cared for and they have access to spares as required.
The owner, Devendra Singh, is a very interesting man (I spoke to him on Friday!) and I would absolutely love to go myself. I do have an invite so fingers crossed I make it there sometime!
