Does anyone know if there is a way for my to do my BHS stages online and just travel for the exams?

Basically, I want to become a Riding instructor and have done for years. But I can't find anywhere near enough to home (sheffield/rotherham area) for me to be able to do them and still live at home/look after the boys - as it'd mean i'd have to give up Blue and i'm reluctant to leave Herc again/ and still do my pub shifts. I can't drive, but if i can get somewhere on a bus with a bit of a walk i don't mind that. And i made the daft mistake of not doing them when i was in Uni at the beginning of the year (i forgot about them really).

I've had to fall back on the ABRS plan as i can get that with a NVQ level 2, which I can do through my YO. But i'd rather do the BHS exams as they are more well known, and they would also allow me to teach in the US (not sure if ABRS do) which i would love to do at some point, even if it was just for a few months.

I don't see why you couldn't study at home, then travel to a centre to take the exams. That's what I'll be doing, but as a 'hobby' rather than for a career.

I've just bought two manuals and a workbook from Amazon to do my Stage 1

Are you under 25, if so you can do your pony club exams which I'm sure you don't need to travel to and they are equivelent to BHS exams also cheaper. I'm working on my A test atm then I will do my ptt.

Also I don't think you need much training especially for stage 3/4 and below, as the pc test I have taken which are equivelent to this are kind of easy as long as you did reasearch.

Have done some more research, and can study from home :) but wouldn't be able to do the riding optional unit as it has to be practical :(....

...However, I *think* (from my poor attempts at desiphering the BHS website) that I can transfer a NVQ level 2 for direct entery in to the PTT level....Which i can teach with right? (i mainly want to teach beginners and kids) then can work through to AI when I get the time or if i need to. :D lol

The NVQ does but you need the 'schooling horses' option ie: one of the NVQ ridden exams and I believe that what's required is equivalent to the riding part of either Stage 2 or Stage 3. The PTT does allow you teach but to get the BHSPTC qualification, you'll need to do the first aid and child protection courses.

Doing it all from home is possible on the care side, but for the ridden side, you'll need some BHS input just so you do things in the right way etc. Classic example is the forward light seat etc for jumping etc.

Whoop. Luckily my YO is a NVQ assessor (sp?) which is why i was planning on going that route as she already said i can do it, she's a BHS instructor so should be able to help there :D

I think whichever route I go i'll need a first aid and child protection certificate...Plus i think they're a good idea to have anyway along with Riding and Road safety, so was already planning on getting them asap/while doing NVQ's if possible.

I think you will find you have to do rather a lot of training for these exams, particularly if you want to pass them!

Stage one and two have specific manuals that give you everything you need to know, and they do workbooks that go with them. Once you have a good instructor for a few lessond before the exams, you should be fine, Thats the way I'll be doing it. Stage 3 and 4 are more complicated, as far as I know, and my riding would let me down for those stages, so more experienced tutoring, I think!!! Depends on how much you already know!!
Best of Luck with it!
