I am training for my bhs stage 1 exam and have a few questions.
I am supposed to wear either a hacking jacket or a jumper, what type of jumper?
Also, in the exams safety seems to be a big issue so when asked to groom the horse, what do I do about the face, would I be allowed to just fasten the horses headcollar round his neck?
Finally, if something tragic happens and I fall off in the riding part, is it an instant fail?

If you have a jacket, wear it but if not, a plain navy or black jumper (think old-fashioned) will do. Grooming face- I presume you would untie leadrope and fasten headcollar loosely around neck or undo side bits of headcollar depending on style. Make sure you ask the horse to move around you, not him moving you about!
If you fell off in the riding I would be concerned- you're not doing anything exciting and your horses are unlikely to be too exciting. Really, for you to fall off there would have to be a freak occurence, in which case they would be more sympathetic I suppose....

Yes wear a hacking jacket, shirt and tie with long boots or short ones with gaiters.

I would leave the headcoller on while grooming the face. But if you want to put it around the neck make sure the leadrope is untied but still through the string so if the horse pulls back it can come loose.

You will not have someone watching over you the whole time, the examiner will be walking round everyone and more than likely the horse will be in its stable. So just do the face when the examiner isnt looking if you are unsure, then make sure its tied up again before he gets back. He may ask you what you did though, so as long as you can explain why you did what you did then you will be ok. Just make sure the knot isnt in the leadrope if the headcoller is around the neck.
