I've been thinking recently about starting my stages. 2 reasons, I could never afford them when I was young and I don't envisage being a school teacher all my life, I'd really like to be a riding instructor.

So, what are people's thoughts on the exams? I feel I could probably do the HK1 now...is it better to do the HK and riding together?

wether you do both together depends on how good you are at exams realy and how much money you have got. it is alot more expensive to do the riding and the care separately but it is a long day if you do everyhing in one go. once i got to stage3 i started doing bits separately myself.
and if you want to teach best be qualified, in todays litigatious society you are much beter protected with a qualification but if you are a school teacher you know that already!

Yep, already aware of the legal side of it all

You wouldn't believe the paperwork I have to fill in for every science practical I want to do! (Biology & Chemistry teacher!).

If yu do the British Riding Clubs Equitation & Horse Welfare exams 1, 2, & 3 you are exempt from B.H.S. Stages 1 & 2, and can go straight in to stage 3. The exam fees for all six of the BRC exams total £45.00 although the organising club will have to charge more than that to cover their costs. (The fee payable to BRC is £7.50 per exam.)
You can also take the PTT on its own now, although you do have to be able to show that you can ride to a least stage 2 standard I think.
Lastly I have an idea that the incomes for a school teacher & a riding teacher are slightly different!!! , which is something you may need to give consideration to!

LOL, yes the income is different and it's not something I'm going to be doing straight away. I envisage going part time with science teaching. In the end it's about what makes me happy. I love teaching, but my degree is in Animal Science and my passion is with animals and teaching, not science and teaching. So a job combining the 2 would be great. Am looking into lecturing further down the line when I've got more manangement experience in education.
