Hi, I am really interested in doing my BHS stage 1 and just wanted to find out how others went out about it. Did you do it all through a yard and take your exam through that yard as well? How did you get on? What does it cost in total? Loads of questions I know - sorry! Just would like to hear other peoples experiences :) Thanks.

I did mine indepemdantly, something to do on the winter nights.
I stopped at stage 3 as it got to expensive and i didnt agree with parts of their teaching or the methods used.

You can certainly do stages 1 and 2 independantly. The BHS produce some very comprehensive text books. By stage 3 you really need to be getting some outside assistance. Many professional yards have working pupil positions where they help with both the revisions and the exam cost as part of the salary package. Or you can find a local training yard and just pay for the exam prep.

You have to get outside assistance for your PTT as you need to build a portfolio. I've not heard of anyone doing thier stage 4 or AI outside of professional involvement with horses.

You can't take your stage 1 before 14 (I know you are older than that) but you will find that a lot of those taking thier stage 1 are about that age. The 18 year olds on our yard are all about to do the final part of thier stage 3 combining it with A levels. 2 are going on to work for the PTT - the others don't want to pursue a career with horses so this is just a "fill in" thing pre university.
