Reading other threads on insurance has got me thinking about this, the cost of insurance for vet bills for my lot taking into account thier value and exclusions are not worth it but I like showing mostly inhand and have a rider for one so do really need 3rd party/public liability so what does BHS gold membership actually cover?? (in plain english and not legal jargen!) does anyone have any experiences in claiming and why do you use them??

The third party public liability policy will cover any horses owned and ridden by you, I don't think it will cover the different rider for personal accident so they will possibly need their own policy for that.

It is also meant to be used as a last resort, so if you are covered on your household policy for 3rd party liability then you need to use that first.

I am covered on my household policy and have WHW membership for the liability insurance cover too.

I honestly think it's a necessity even if you aren't showing. Horses can escape from fields causing damage or hurt somebody trespassing on your land (heaven forbid) so it is still needed for horses doing nothing.

I did look at the website but couldnt understand all the legal jargen enough to make an informed decision.
think ill give them a ring, sounds like a better option for my bunch in theory :D

bhs membership is just third party liability so if a horse you own or are looking after/ riding causes injury to a third party (like getting onto a road and causing a car accident or trampling a trespasser on your field, of getting loose at a show and kicking another horse) then, if you have no other insurance, the bHS will cover you for the thrid parties cost.
The sum is £20 million - a realistic figure for a car accident in which 2/3 people could be perminantly injured.

This is all I wanted! :D sounds so simple! Think I just took one look at thier very long downloadable PDF legal small print thing and it sent my head spinning!

But a rider riding your horse is not covered, although if the rider fell off and your horse ran off and caused damage the horse would be covered.

If the rider fell off and was injured enough to prevent them working the BHS would not cover this, they need their own rider policy.

(Have direct knowledge of this scenario).

Well sounds reasonable, Im not too worried about the rider as long as my horse is covered should anything happen, my riders very experienced and does have her own horses so assume she has her own cover ( I should actually check shouldnt I!)
God its stressfull when I was a kid im sure nobody was insured and people accepted accidents happen and no one got sued!

Also it doesn't cover vets fees or tack or anything I don't think, it's just third party.
That's the whoe point!

There are many of us who for various reasons don't want to insure our tack or for vet fees etc. - in my case because I have found that insurance companies would really rather not pay out.

I know, I guess its helpful for some people not to have vets fees then others would like it. OP > those are the main things I picked up when looking at BHS membership for myself. Hope its helpful

Hmmm if it covered tack and vets fees for £60 a year - they would go bust pretty quickly. (and i might even consider insuring for vets fees !!!!!)

Insurance companies only stay in business if you pay them more than they pay you - that is the whole point. You get the occasional lucky person but it is gambleing and the house always wins.

Well OP only wants 3rd party insurance - that's why she's asking about BHS.

I dont think theres much point in vets fees covers in my case anyway, my horses are just pampered pets purchased out of pity, they wernt expensive (all well under 1k) they are by no means competion horses, at best ridden twice a week for a max of 30mins and do the odd inhand class! if god forbid I had excessive vet bill I would just PTS while theres so many more healthy unwanted horses in desperate need of homes( I know that sounds harsh but its a sad reality we face with all the irresponsible over breeding going on) tack is easily replaced so I dont care about that so it really is just public liability needed just in case, im going to sort it now! :D
