As long as not receiving financial remuneration then it covers the holder. The BHS 3rd party is void if you are doing anything for payment.

It covers you. The policy holder.
This. It also means that any other riders/handlers need their own insurance to negate their liabilities in case they make a mistake when handling your horse. Thew horse itself isn't insured. You are, as owner.

As many people ride/handle Rigsby, I got him his own policy. His riders are ad-hoc and it wouldn't be fair or worth each one organising insurance.

I thought it covered horses one does not own. I ride RS and shared horses and our yard expect their sharers to have this or similar insurance. In fact I set it up before my very first RS hack. It does not cover 3rd party liability if one has this covered under another polcy, e.g. Home Insurance.

I thought it also covered people handling/riding your horse with your permission and any horses under your care. Not paid for obviously.
It covers your liability for the horse when others are handling/riding but not theirs. So, there would be a loophole that they could personally be liable whilst in control of my horse and BHS advised me that every rider should be a gold member so they were covered. It was cheaper to cover the horse!

An ad-hoc ride would not count, but regular or paid riders would need their own insurance.

People were doing me a favour, so I paid for his own insurance.

Interesting so if you have a horse on part livery and they get out the field or hurt someone at catch in time you are not covered with the BSH gold.

So what most of us who keep our horses at livery where the horse maybe handled by someone else would need either everyone handling the horse to have the public liability insurance or a policy where the horse is covered.

In a situation where a horse is kept on livery and it escapes from field and gets onto a road and causes an accident would the BSH gold cover that?

I expect with a lot of these things it would be hard to get a pay out. If you fall off a horse and it gets loose and causes an accident the might say it your fault for not being a good enough rider.

I believe in all of those situations you would be covered if someone tried to sue you, but the person handling them would not be covered. So, for instance, if the person handling them dropped the rope and the horse escaped and hot a car, that person would not be covered if the car owner's insurance decided to sue them for dropping the rope. But you would be covered if they decided to sue you.

It was all clear as mud TBH, but, as I said, people were doing me a favour by riding Rigs so I wanted insurance that would mean they they didn't all have to get their own, so I insured him for around £6 a month, and we are all covered! BHS said they would all have to be members, madness when there was a £6 solution that covered everyone!

On riding school horses, you should/would be covered by their own policies. Ie the riding school would take the hit, not the rider (unless of course it was found that you directly caused the incident).

The BHS summaries are here: https://www.bhs.org.uk/membership/insurance-information/

It’s not as good coverage as perhaps some think it is.
