or, to give it its full title "BHS is all about the rider, NH is more about the horse. Discuss"

I had some unfortunate experiences with BHS many decades ago, which is why I veered more towards NH when I got my first horses several years later. Have things changed or not?
 
The BHS who will come put and sort horse welfare problems out when the RSPCA and WHW didn't. Riding and road safety courses which are excellent even for young riders. Yep it's all about the rider. The BHS who in their courses teach the basics of meadow management how to look after fields.

What rubbish the BHS has a huge welfare division. And campaigns on various welfare based issues.

I've never seen any NH organisation that is a registered charity with horse welfare at the heart of its aims. I've never seen them campaigning about ragwort or irresponsible breeding or obesity, the BHS do.
 
I've met fanatics who will not vere away from their chosen method (BHS/traditional or NH) even though the approach clearly doesn't suit the particular horse that they are dealing with.

ETA. I agree that there is more to the BHS than just teaching.
 
The BHS do lots of great welfare work but I don't get on with their way of teaching, I almost gave up horses after years of bhs teaching getting me no further forward then I discovered classical teaching and it all started to drop into place.
I do the the bhs are trying to update themselves, they've produced a few books about using more natural methods to handle horses but I think they need to get a hold of the quality of some of the instructors that use their name.
 
I agree that the BHS is more holistic in its approach dealing with welfare, management, access and safety, breeding etc whereas many NH approaches focus on behavioural issues only.
 
Ah. Good points, I wasn't clear in my original post: I was thinking more about the teaching side of things.

Agree BHS are doing the best they can re welfare and ragwort awareness.
