BHS Magazine - i am so dissapointed in you !

Parelli have had most of the youtube videos removed, though some still remain.

Have a look at http://teambarney.wordpress.com/ for further info. Under 'More' there is an image of Pat Parelli jumping a foal!

They are despicable abusive trainers, pretending to be kind and horse friendly.
To be fair, I've seen a few pictures of SJ foals jumping. I remember one, think it may have been Arko's brother? Not that that makes it ok.

Yes I emailed Graham Cory and Dave Prince, but no reply as yet. My RDO has replied, but to me in my capacity as a county chairman. I think she feels that the BHS is damned if they do, and damned if they dont.

I still dont agree- the figureheads of any organisation that the BHS promotes, at least, should be above reproach, and the Parellis have shown themselves not to be.

I realise that the BHS is trying to 'sex up' its image to attract maybe a younger membership, but I do not think this is the right way to go about it. That wonky three legged demonic looking horse on the logo was bad enough!:D

Some years back, there were moves to incorporate Parelli - or maybe it was the "Equine Ethology" offshoot? - into the BHS curriculum on a formal basis. As far as I know, nothing came of that. Does this notice/article indicate that a second attempt is on the cards?

I was thinking about that - I think it was the equine ethology time. From talking to a BHS representatitve at an EE demo (some 5ish years ago) they made all the right noises about recognising the need to include horse behaviour in their training. It seemed to come and go for a bit - wonder if as you say, this is another attempt?

No its just a full page advert/competiton promising

"Want to experiance two days that will change your life?

British Horse has teamed up with Parelli to offer three lucky readers the chance to win a pair of tickets to the 2011 Parelli Celebration.

This great two days takes place on April 9 and 10 at the LG Arena, Birmingham with Linda and Pat Parelli sharing their wealth of knowledge. The 2011 Parelli Celebrationi will have you sitting on the edge of your seat, providing a compelling two days not to be missed.

Everything from Horsenality, to problem horses and developing relationships with horses will be covered. As well as an action-packed educational programme, the team will be celebrating people who have discovered their potential with horses and will showcase theim is Savvy Spotlight Sessions"

If any one want to read any more of this tripe let me know and i will type up some more !

In all fairness this could be anything - BHS teaming up with them, a free ad in return for the free ticket places, a fully paid Parelli'd ad which got approved by BHS... It might be stupid wording, but I don't think its much different to Horse and Hound teaming up with Equi-trek to give away a free trailer?

I was reading that people are planning to cancel their BHS membership over this. That seems crazy to me as the BHS does lots of good things (and some not so good, granted).

Yes I think its a complete over reaction. Much though I will be disappointed if BHS do turn out to be proactively linked with the P word, the benefits of membership, and the 100s of things it does do right far outweigh one decision like this. If it wasn't for BHS we would need someone else to bring out a standard set of exams for the equine industry and wait for them to become trusted and recognised, we'd lose bridleways, we'd lose our voice on all the issues the BHS campaign for on our behalf, we'd lose access to legal support, a register of instructors... The membership fee goes into the charity fund for all these things, not just the Parelli slush fund...

Adds for this are everwhere, even in one of our local give away mags. They are giving tickets away in a competition. There is even a "chat" with Linda P.

haven't read all the replies so apologies if i repeat anything.

i don't think the BHS will take any notice to what we say about them advertising in the magazine, ok they may send an email back saying we apologise if we've offended you however.....blah blah blah.....!
why not put your efforts into winning the tickets (if free entry) and then just not turn up OR turn up and heckle?????

Well just got my magazine today

I dont read it as an endorsement---I read it as an advert for Parelli which happens to have a competition attached to it.
Similar comps for tickets to Apassionata and win a Natural Horsemanship holiday in Spain in adverts promoting products/services which are in magazines all the time.

Mine arrived today as well and that's exactly how I saw it Cuffey. To have all this furore against the BHS who campaign for so many things which we and our horses badly need seems way out of kilter to me.

Doesn't it say the BHS are 'teaming up with' Parelli to offer tickets? That sounds like an endorsement to me!

Yes it does say 'the BHS is teaming up with Parelli'- it is not a paid advertisement, but the advert will have been given FOC in lieu of the three pairs of tickets for the competition.

Not a bad swap for tickets worth about £600, when a full page ad is £2000 plus VAT, and the kudos of having a competition in BHS mag (which as so many people have assumed, means that the BHS is NOT anti the way the Parellis have been seen to treat horses) is worth an awful lot more!

The new logo is pretty awful, and the amount of money it must have cost to redesign/reprint everything would be extortionate... pounds that could have been far better spent.

Perhaps Parelli paid for the BHS's association ? . . personally I wouldn't endorse PNH for all the money in the world.

I won't be renewing my membership, I can get public liability insurance from BD, WHW or the like.

Even had they paid, which you can, as I know the CRC did to become an affiliate, the BHS I should have thought, would not wish to be allied to people who treat horses in this way.

Re the logo, I am certain had the BHS run a competition amongst the 70,000 members to design a logo, it would have cost nothing, and been a rather nice touch to have a member design it, rather than spend a shed load of money on that peculiar looking horse!

It is definitely a BHS promotion, not a paid advertisement, Francis. As it states 'The BHS is teaming up with Parelli to offer tickets...'. If an advertisement, it always states at the top of the page. In any case, a full page ad is £2000 plus VAT, a drop in the bucket to the Parellis!

As a largish specialist internet retailer, I'm REGULARLY approached by the selling arm of both commercial magazines AND journals of organisations to spend several hundreds or thousands of pounds on 'special promotions'. Sometimes I've been asked to have one product featured in a 'win everything on this page' - at a cost of £500 or so AND the prize which must have a minimum value of £500

I'm quite sure BHS welcome the fact that this organisation will have paid a lot of money to be a 'special feature' and donated the prize. However the features will have been organised by the company selling the advertising space and probably not by BHS, who will have outsourced this I expect.
You don't have to enter the competition, or even read the feature (I didn't)

Nope! They are trying everything in their power to patch up the truth. Yet there are 100's of videos of their stuff on youtube from their DVDs which are being advocated and they will happily let them be on youtube....

Hmm I will circulate it around Facebook! That could do it!

Dear OP and others

I will attempt to explain why we included the competition, but first of all I should make it clear that in no way does the BHS “endorse” any product or organisation. The disclaimer on page three of every issue of the magazine is meant to reassure our members that this is the case. Furthermore, the phrase “British Horse has teamed up with . . .” is used frequently to introduce our competitions to the reader (if you check the copy for the holiday competition on page 51, you will see the same phrase used).

Whereas the BHS once had a reputation (deserved or otherwise) for intolerance bordering on arrogance, apparently believing that there were only two ways of doing things – the BHS way and the wrong way – we now very much adhere to the line that there are two ways of doing things – the way which achieves the desired ends safely, effectively and without detriment to the welfare of the horse, and all other ways.

Many BHS members have taken the view that there are, in Pat Parelli’s methods, elements which work for them and which conform to the “safe/effective/no detriment” imperative. Doubtless many have formed a contrary view. The important point is that people are entitled to take a view and act on it.

We should beware of damning totally any person, group, organisation or creed simply because one aspect out of the whole meets with our disapprobation. The BHS view on Pat Parelli – as on every other trainer or advocate of particular training methods – is that, where the techniques conform to the “safe/effective/no detriment” imperative they are valid, and where they do not so conform, we depricate them.

Our values and hard work remain much focussed on improving all equestrian related areas, particularly Safety, Welfare, Access, Training and Qualifications.

Should anyone have any further concerns or queries please contact The British Horse Society by emailing enquiries@bhs.org.uk.

Thank you
