Hi All
I've recently cancelled my insurance policies due to the rising costs for things I have never claimed for, and things that are unlikely to be paid out for because of the ages of my horses.
Obviously I will still be needing public liability insurance. Does anybody use the BHS for this? Or is there anybody else that you could recommend to me?

Many thanks, and sorry if this makes no sense (its been one of those mornings)

Just querying that too. tempted to take the gold policy but cant make my mind up cus Im a ditherer!
£57.00 for it so seems good.

Im a gold member, never had to claim but definatly worth having.

I know I rejoined at badminton last year and they had a special offer on, (think there was a voucher at the back of the programme)
they were quite sneaky as they tried to get away with me paying the full amount, it was just by luck my friend was flicking through the programme and saw it. I had actually put my programme down on their counter as I was filling in the forms. and asked them if they had any "show offers for joining on the day"
think I paid about £45.

Oh yeah and it covers you riding every horse and at RC events where you aint a member.

Yes, I have BHS Gold, it's £57 for the year. I changed to it when we increased from one horse to four, it gives me peace of mind, especially as two of ours are youngsters, one of which is over wintering at a friends place.

OH is a member of BASC for the same reason, he gets full public liability cover regarding shooting and also legal help if (God forbid!) it was ever needed.

I've done this for the past six or so years and saved £££££'s!

I think that some public liability might be covered on your household policy, so worth checking that out first.

To be honest it's the only reason I joined the BHS as a gold member, but you do get other benefits with your membership so that was a bonus for me.

World Horse Welfare Champion Plus membership also has public liability insurance

I joined as a gold member last year because the BHS had a special offer on in association with British riding Clubs, which is still on until at least the end of this year.

If you are already a member of a riding club which is associated to BRC you can get gold memberfship for £39.90 for the first year. There is an ad for it in the winter 2010 edition of the BRC Rider magazine or you can probably get information off their website.

As Touchstone says, check your household insurance first if that is the only reason you want to join BHS. I was a member for years for the insurance then when a car hit my horse and tried to claim damages off me, I tried to go through their insurance and they passed it onto my household insurance.

I have it, the policy is underwritten by Brit insurance via SEIB.

It is not just public liability but also personal accident insurance and you are covered even if riding someone elses horse.

The full details are on the website.

There are other benefits of membership too like the free legal helpline, the bi-monthly magazine, and the fact that you are supporting a charity which works for horse welfare and access.

Check the limits of all the other organisations offering liability insurance for members, or a cheap deal on policies.
Last time I looked the BHS was for claims of up to 10 million & the others were substantially lower. May have changed, but still worth checking.

well said katt,

I have been a member since I did my exams years ago, I did only join for that reason at the time but with all the added benefits they have I just stayed with them, I just have vets bill covered for one of my horses with a seperate insurer, (others are too many exclusions)

I have this, and for my children too. Previous insurers never paid out; i've saved £1000's and have savings in case of emergency. Insurance is generally a nightmare. They wil always try to wriggle out of laying a claim.
