Hi all

So as some of you will know I have just bought a horse - yippee! I'm now trying to navigate the minefield of insurance. Regarding 3rd party liability I see both BHS and the Pony Club offer this as part of their membership. The only person in the family who will be riding is my daughter who's 11 but I will be handling the horse. I have a zillion questions, but these are the main ones right now:

1) Is BHS Gold membership worth it other than for the insurance?
2) Is Pony Club membership worth it other than for the activities (which right now I'm not sure my daughter wants to do)?
3) If my daughter is riding but I'm handling do I assume we both need 3rd party cover, or would this all be covered by any policy of mine?

Thank you!

If I were you, I'd get pony club membership. It offers public liability and 3rd party insurance for the pony and all who handle her/him (better double check, but that's the impression I get) and your daughter will love the activities and rallies. It's a win win if you ask me!

Are you insuring for vet bills as well? If so, for now, it may be easier to just add third party on to that (although do compare prices).

Most insurance will cover anyone handling the horse with your permission, but you should check this carefully.

Get vets bills insurance ASAP! Our new horse managed to cut herself on day 4 of us owning her .. thankfully the insurance paid up as it was accidental.

The Pony Club has got much better dealing with children who are a bit different/shy/have special educational needs. Have a chat to your branch DC and let them know what your daughter will need in order to feel comfortable taking part - good luck!

Pony Club is excellent. My daughter (who will be 3 tomorrow) has been attending the rallies this year. She obviously started off really shy but the other kids were really welcoming. We also in the Highlands.
