I am currently working towards my BHS Stage 3, I have all the books and dvds to help me, and I am working with a variety of different horses. I do BE, pony club and riding club activities. I am also working towards my Pony club AH test. I was just wondering if anybody has any other suggestions on how to make sure I am ready fo my exam?

Riding as many horses as possible to develop your feel and having and watching lessons with good trainers are invaluable. You need to fill a toolbox of skills and experiences that you can draw upon on the day. Could you get work experience in a yard at weekends, holidays if you are studying or evenings? Those who are successful in my experience are candidates who have seen life and learnt how to deal with it safety and correctly.

Very best of luck :)

This is very good advice - particulary regards having experience on the ground in a commercial environment.

I Agree with Measles, ride anything and everything, i sat on anything that neighed when i was waiting to sit mine, and try to make it loads of different types. You do need to get some sort of yard experience, in the 3 you really need to be able to show some common sense equestrian skills and put your stamp on the care and management side of things.
If youre confident and know your stuff youll be fine, if they as much as spot a chink in your armour theyll keep picking to see where it leads

With regards to care... Do everything exactly as you would in an exam ..every day in the run up from a couple of weeks before so you don't make any silly mistakes on the day.
For example ...double bridle..undo all the keepers before you put it on
Skip out stable before you do ANYTHING or as soon as horse passes droppings...this seems to be thing that irritates the bhs more than anything..

Irritates the hell out of me when I stand in a fresh dropping so I can go along with this!!

With regard the riding, are you riding some school horses as well as privately owned? Especially jumping. The horses used for exams are usually school horses - they have to earn their keep between exams!! They might not all necessarily be horses you would choose to take round a BE90 given the option!

Lunging is a weak spot across all BHS exams, either people don't practise enough OR they do it so much they end up becomming complacent and making silly mistakes.

Good advice - jump horses who are less able than you might expect and help them jump tracks almost pushing the boundaries of their ability (safely and sensibly of course) rather than focussing solely on those are are jumping above the level. Ditto the advice on lunging - do it correctly every time so that it becomes natural and you can pick up on any mistakes in the exam almost before they happen.

If you don't know it already, go and have a lesson at the centre where you will do your test. Pick the centre carefully, they vary so much.
I found with my stage 3 that in fact the examiners wanted real experience and confidence. I said a couple of things which were at odds with the BHS method, so long as I had a reasonable explanation that was fine.
