For anyone who has done BHS stage exams, how easy is stage 1. I want to start working through the stage exams and looking at the syllabus think I could book the exam without having to do a course seperately (It looks quite straight forward!)

Any feedback from people who have done it?

I passed mine about a month ago, yay :) I did do a course, but tbh I knew the majority of the stuff anyway. But it is helpful to have someone to ask if unsure of anything, and you have to do things the "BHS" way. Folding rugs blah blah blah. Its not rocket science, and if you are experienced anyway you should be ok. I borrowed a book off my teacher, which pretty much had the contents in, so if you can get hold of that, then that's useful. The riding was fine, you get given plods/old knackered horses :p As long as you can show a balanced seat, be independant of the reins and ride relatively effectively, you should be fine. You need to do without stirrups in walk and trot, and raised seat over poles, so quite easy. You do need to get some practise working in open order/ ride form if you aren't used to it though.

I've got my AI, so done my 1-3

It's difficult to know if you're ready without seeing you ride. Stage 1 is basic and I didn't do any training for it, just had an assessment lesson to double check. Although the content is basic you still have to have a correct position etc.

Why don't you pop along to your local examination centre and get an assessment lesson?

Otherwise just read and study the book.

Remember to make sure you do everything by the book, dont walk behind the horse, always tie the horse up in the stable away from the door, tack up tied up etc do everything for safety. check your tack before you get on etc etc, you have to wear gloves so make sure you take them off before you check the horse over, although a girl on my course never took them off and passed?
