I am sure I read some where (think it may have been in "Horse" mag) that the BHS are thinking about letting people take their stage II and III in seperate sections on different days.
I really want to do my stage III, but will have limited access to training, and worried it will be too much on one day for me (I've already failed it once).
I am only interested in doing the Horse Knowledge side, and not really worried about the riding side.

Does anyone know about this change?

I don't know much about the new system but on the old one you could take care and riding on different days.

I'm not sura about the change but the stage 3 is too much in one day. You can just take the care section on its own, you don't have to do care and riding.

You'll still do Stage 2 and Stage 3 split into riding and care sections.

If you fail anything though, you only have to go back and do that unit as such. So say you failed the anatomy part, you wouldn't have to re-sit the entire care section, just the relevant unit.

Yes I believe that it's now modular based. Have you looked on their website? It's not always clear but they may have a document on their. Good luck with the stage III.

Yes, thats what I though. I know you can take the riding and care separately, but I had read about BHS doing it so you could do different modules - such as just doing anatomy etc.
I have looked on their site, but couldn't find anything. I have emailed them to send me more info, as I really would like to take mt stage III and then maybe work towards my stage IV.

The seperate care modules for BHS stage 3 are

UNIT 1 – Fit Tack and Equipment and Care for the Competition Horse
UNIT 2 – Horse Health, Anatomy and Physiology
UNIT 4 – Lunge a Fit Horse for Exercise
UNIT 3a – The Principles of Feeding and Fittening Horses
UNIT 3b – The Principles of Stabling and Grassland Care for Horses

It IS possible to take the modules seperately but the way they are priced is intended to encourage you to take the care as 1 section. I would recommend studying for the whole care section and then resitting any modules in which you are unsuccesful.

The breakdown can be found for the Stage 3 if you go to the BHS website - choose Training and Qualifications from the top menu, then from the side menu - Examinations, then Stage 3, then syllabus then in the main body of text it gives you the option to see the full syllabus.

Dear Lippyx

You are right in understanding that the BHS has “unitised” its exams, which means you can take separate sections or “units” on different days. This certainly helps you to focus on one bit at a time, particularly if you have limited access to training. Also, if you decide to take two or more units on the same day and you are unfortunate enough to fail one, you can “bank” the unit/s you pass and just re-take the one/s you fail.

For instance, the Stage 2 is now broken down into 9 units - 2 riding units and 7 care units. You can download the exam syllabus from our web site www.bhs.org.uk click the Training and Qualifications tab and then the Examinations and Qualifications tab. Of course, if you have any further queries, the Exams Office (Tel 024 76 840 508) is always pleased to help and advise.

Hope this helps, and- Good Luck!

It's great that the exams have been split down... Soooo much less stressful!! I'm going for stage 3 soon and I'm so much more happy about it knowing that if I fail a bit I haven't got to retake the whole lot!! :)

Claire, has the Stage IV been unitised yet?

Hi Rowreach

Currently with Stage IV, it is in the process of being completely unitised to be the same as Stages I II and III, although it IS slightly different already to these exams: with Stage IV you do have to take the whole exam on one day, BUT if you fail a section in the riding part you do have the opportunity to come back and do re-takes in these sections (as long as you passed the Care Section first).
If you fail the Care Section, unfortunately you do have to re-take the whole thing.

I hope that helps!?

Claire

But you can take the HK&C part separately from the Riding part surely? I think I will ring you up :D We've already had "emergency talks" with a few assessors re the changes to 1/2/3 and PTT cos nobody tells us trainers anything lol :D I think I liked it all the way it was ;)

Thanks Claire, for all your help! It will certainly make it a lot easier for candidates to take these exams in separate modules. Yes it may work out more, but if it means I can concentrate on one bit at a time, then I don't mind!!

It will be great if they can do the same with stage IV. I only really want to do the care side of the exams.
