Hello my lovelys,

I would like to ask about BHS stage one as I've been told it's hard work! But what would your top tips be to impress also research on this improvment of your future revernaces?!!

On another note! Anyone is welcome to there openions although please don't leave comments to affend are upset as I've had many problems asking question with rude responces and it upset me and made me agrue so I apolige if I affended anyone, but please note Im speech inpaired and take things out of porportion!

I found the stage 1 a nice exam, main thing i would say if you do make a mistake and notice it correct it straight away, do not leave it thinking you already done it now, also if poss I went and had a lesson the day before at the test centre it just give me a feel for the place a little. good luck

Yes, I would agree with the person above. Stage 1 is really nice, they are very kind to you and it is really designed to 'welcome' you to the BHS exam system.

If you answer a question wrong you can always call them back and just say 'look, I gave the wrong answer earlier, this is the right one' and they are happy to accept that.

I really enjoyed taking my stage 1. My advise would be to make sure that you have had a couple of stable management lessons at a BHS yard first though because there are certain things (like rugging up, mucking out, tacking up etc) that need to be done the BHS way. Ditto the riding... it would be frustrating to fail because you took your feet out of your stirrups to adjust them or something silly like that.

Good luck

stage one is a good exam. Nothing to 'non' common sense imo. You need to be up on the 'BHS way' of doing things tho, as they are fussy on things like tying up/how you tack up etc, just make sure you read the books and do everything how they say you should in there. Even if you never do it like that again.

The riding part is basic and nothing to worry about really. Just walk/trot/canter horse not expected to be in an outline, alotho obviously a good steady contact must be ridden in, and if you can show an outline even better.

Ive got my exam on Thursday and im quite scared too, although quite confident that I know what I need to know. So keep the tips coming as I need some too

Oh and I have my own horse and have had 10 Stage 1 lessons. The hardest thing I have found is the feeding section, you need to know what all the feeds do, what type of horse you would/wouldnt feed them to and also how much in weight you would feed to a specific horse (approx.), and roughage/concentrate ratios etc.

Feeding in my stage 1 was hysterical - it was my first 'station' of the day, and they had us waiting in the room for the examiner. The feed samples were on the table, and there was myself and one other girl who knew what they were, everyone else was panicking - they had learnt the theory, but never actually fed horses (I had worked on a yard for a fair while so had come across most feeds) We went through the samples with them, and told them what they were and why you would feed them. So mkae sure you know what things look like! They also asked a girl a question about what she would feed a shetland in light work, 24h turn out in summer etc etc. She started calculating feed weights etc, he asked someone else who did the same, and then asked 'anyone got a different response' to which I had to pipe up and say I would probably have to tape it's mouth shut as if it had 24hr grazing it would be the size of a house. Remember they are looking for common sense over and above any formulas.

i've got my stage 1 exam a week today, so if anyone else has got any tips keep them coming!!

good luck to everyone else taking their stage 1 too!!

Where are you doing it? I'm thinking about taking it... Just need to find the time to do training/reading. Good luck to everyone, and make sure to give us the tips once you've finished!

I do my training at Foxes in Ledsham, they are fantastic. My exam is at Myerscough College in Preston. There is a centre closer but they didnt have a date until May.

I took mine at college and failed the care aspect of it but my BHS training was rubbish. I failed on the feed part which REALLY annoyed me!!! hehe

The riding part is nice and easy though and you come across as a confident person so I'm sure you'll be fine. When is the exam?
