As i am taking a gap year after i finsih school in May, i am considering doing bhs stages. I am not familiar with how it works, MUST you do 123 etc or can you skip 1 or 2 and go straight to 3?

Also i looked at the syllabus and i wonder, do you attend training, i know my mother did for stage one but if you know alot of the info required, can you attend a few

There are exemptions in which you can go straight into Stage 3. Think it's PC B test and the Riding club exams levels 1-3.

Otherwise it's stages 1 and 2 complete first.

Training wise - stage 1 if you're a horse owner will be a doddle, then the theory gets deeper. Best thing to do if find a local yard than knows the system and see if they offer courses.

i did it while i was at college, but i think you could do it at a local riding centre. you make a portfolio (sp) of evidence that you can do thing like muck out, bandage, methods of restrait (lol) and then get assessed! If i can do it, anybody can!

Hi!
There is a way to skip stages 1 and 2 as I did it.

You have to send a full CV with all of your experience and the skills you have learnt in all of your jobs that are to do with what you learn in the theory side.

You have to tell them your riding experience and then have two people write references for you to say you are up to or above the standard of the stage you want to enter. It would help if they are affiliated with the bhs, e.g I used an FBHS and an AI/BD INT. Trainer

You have to send all of that along with a fee, I cant remember the amount, and the bhs board look at your application at one of their meetings they hold every few months.

If you are considered to be at the right level they will grant you direct entry at stage 3, but you must pass first time or you have to start from the beginning!

If you write to the examiners they should give you all of the details you need and the dates of the board meetings etc.

This is frowned upon by alot of people who think you should start from the beginning but it can be done!!

I hope that made sense!

Good luck!!

bbmat - i was very interested to read your response. are you sure about this? i am trying to get my stage 2 and ptt done this year and as i no longer work in the horse industry i know i have my work cut out.

biggest problem i have is getting riding and road safety done beforehand - is this not compulsory for all wanting to progress to stage 2 and beyond? i have previous experience from working as a deputy yard manager (not a bhs yard) and as a groom (about 20 years ago tho!) and am pretty certain that stage 2 for me will be no problem without any pre-training.

i have done my stage one and two both being down wihtout any tutoring- i jsut bought the books. Was easy enough to do as long as ur ridng is up to scratch and u read up on how to do thigns the "proper" way!!! good luck. U must do one and two before u do three.

Hi!

I am very sure as I was granted direct entry this way.
I forgot to say however that the lowest you can do direct entry at is Stage 3!
As i said before it is not often talked about as it is slightly frowned upon by the 'Old Skool' bhs people.

I feel i may have opened the flood gates!

Hopefully not bbmat - i would have no qualms trying to get to stage three in this way... one of the few things in life i am sure about is that i am more than capable of acheiving my stage 3 without too much help!
